Southfield just was voted most livable city.

It depends on what you're looking for. be more specific.
Southfield, Farmington Hills, Royal Oak, Bloomfield, West Bloomfield, Birmingham..

Having just left Michigan over a year ago, I can tell you to avoid living in Detroit and any area touching it.

On the northern side, I wouldnt stop until you reached Troy.

On the western side, I would avoid ... ALOT. Maybe its best just to list the GOOD areas. Bellville, Canton, Novi, Northville, Farmington, etc. It's a lot more expensive here, but thats the price one pays if they choose to live in michigan and want a safe area to live in.

The Grosse Pointes are probably the best close in burbs.

I lived in Farmington Hills for 6 years and loved it, and if you have the money then move to West Bloomfield

This a completely fear-based response indicative of many surburanites in the area. This person is scared of anything slightly urban, not Detroit. There are many wonderful, vibrant communities, both in and around Detroit, this individual has dismissed.

I would definitely suggest Midtown, because of the close proximity to your job. Its a very vibrant and walkable city. They have so many different activities to choose from and the Annual Noel Night that is held every year before christmas. Not to mention that your right in the middle of the Cultural District. Also you have the urban living that most suburban residents trying to experience. So if want to live in Troy or Farmington and have the hour commute and not knowing your neighbors, then live in that BORING life. That was the reason why I left the burbs to live in a more exciting lifestyle. So Good Luck on your new job and really consider MIDTOWN!

If you move to southfield stay in the north eastern part.
Do not travel on to 6 mile, or near it. It will just lead to McNicholoson, and that is no place to be.
Farmington Hills is nice, same with Grossepoint, all probably the 'safest' places to live.
Do not ever wander out from those points though, let me tell you.

What are you looking for? Do you want a quiet place to live, or an exciting place? Are good schools important? What do you want nearby: shopping? Water? Parks? farms? forest?

If you HAVE to live in a suburb, Warren, Eastpointe, Royal Oak and Ferndale are great places to live: they are safe, nearby, and conveniently close to the highways that will take to directly to work!

Whoever said to "stay away from any area touching Detroit" is an ill informed person. All these places border on Detroit, and some are constantly in the running for some of the safest suburbs in America. Warren probably has the most crime out of the burbs, but even Warren is very safe.

I would also suggest looking into Midtown. Its a booming, up and coming again area with much lower crime rates than Detroit's outer neighborhoods. And you could walk to work!
