Detroit should collapse in a heap, if that is what will happen without a bailout.
The fiscal liberalism of this city will be a stark warning to ALL poorly managed public institutions that THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES TO BAD ACTION! Besides, the problem does not lie in Detwah alone. How will you explain to Chicago/New Jersey/Harrisburg,PA?..(fill in any number of insolvent municipalities and states) that they don't deserve a bailout, too?
Remember this: Insurance against fiscal mismanagementl ALWAYS INCREASES THE INCIDENCE OF FISCAL MISMANAGEMENT.
Now I think it's time for popcorn and a recliner to watch this train wreck unfold, in slo-mo, as usual.

..But I'm really not a hater, guys. I just think Republic has a visionary idea that has but the slimmest chance of being realized.
Unfortunately Detroit needs to be Destroyed before it is reborn. If immigrants with energy and money, and, oddly enough, a ton of gay people who typically form tight, organically-grown communities in the depressed fringes of cities, can be drawn SOMEHOW to live and work here it could trigger a rebirth, albeit a slow one, of this town.
We can only hope.

Destroyed? Really?

"Social tensions rose with the rapid pace of growth and racism continued to be a major problem in the United States. On January 20, 1942, with a cross burning nearby, 1,200 racist whites tried to prevent black families from moving into a new housing development in an all-white area of the city. Later in June 1943, Packard Motor Car Company promoted three blacks to work next to whites in their assembly lines. In response, 25,000 whites walked off the job, effectively slowing down the critical war production. It was clear that whites who worked with blacks in the same plant nevertheless refused to work side-by-side with them. During the protest, a voice with a southern accent shouted in the loudspeaker, "I’d rather see Hitler and Hirohito win than work next to a ******."[30] The Detroit Race Riot of 1943 occurred three weeks after the Packard Motor Car incident. Over the course of three days, 34 people were killed. Of them, 25 were African–American, and approximately 600 were injured"

My only outrage is that Washington sends Millions of dollars outside to foreign countries that are way more mismanaged and corrupt (Egypt, Afghanistan to name a few.) but when something happens inside their country, nothing is done.

Republicans especially hate the poor and unions so it's a given they are not going to help. We have survived a succession of right wing presidents and Congress since 1980 and we will survive this.

Where does this quote come from? And what does it have to do with Detroit in 2013?

I've long said that Detroit should be declared a natural disaster area eligible for FEMA clean-up funds. The problems in Detroit were caused by people and people are a part of nature.

Our global empire is costing American taxpayers dearly. 1000+ military bases around the world in the countries of our allies - for what?

RealClearWorld - The True Costs of America's Empire
Excerpt: "How much does the United States spend each year occupying the planet with its bases and troops? How much does it spend on its global presence? Forced by Congress to account for its spending overseas, the Pentagon has put that figure at $22.1 billion a year. It turns out that even a conservative estimate of the true costs of garrisoning the globe comes to an annual total of about $170 billion. In fact, it may be considerably higher. Since the onset of "the Global War on Terror" in 2001, the total cost for our garrisoning policies, for our presence abroad, has probably reached $1.8 trillion to $2.1 trillion".

Detroit is not unique. Other areas where we did manufacturing are in trouble or have gone bust. Hey, that's the "free global market" working its "magic".
We are rebuilding communities and establishing permanent bases in Afghanistan and Iraq thus expanding our Empire and its cost to taxpayers.
The RW globalist view is that, to increase our power and presence, we can afford to rebuild foreign nations and their cities, but can't afford to look after our own - because that would be "wrong". Ever hear "tax-hating" repubs complain about these costs? Seems like we have bottomless pockets for that while cutting "unwarranted" programs for the needy.
The subject of "Empire" can be a topic in itself, but it is connected to troubles here at home with failing infrastructure, cities, markets, opportunity, and the conveniently-ignored "general welfare" clause of the Constitution.
