Given that it could have been bought for $1 million, it's very stupid indeed. That's not to mention the cleanup costs and the other opportunities lost. What's the saying--fools and their money are soon parted?

Not sure what the upset is. If it's not you spending the money, why is it such a big deal?

What are the odds the winner never steps forward to claim the property? Could have been bought a few months ago for $1M. Been on the auction since October 08 and in the final hour two mysterious bidders emerge and run the price to $6M?
Sure, I am believing this...

It was a dr from Texas but when they got her husband on the line he said "...that's not right" and hung up.

Consider that it would have cost $5 mil just for a partial demolition in the 90s...

Unless she's bidding on behalf of Jerry Jones and he plans on moving the Cowboys up here it simply defies the imagination as to what ANYONE might do with the property.

It is not a big deal. It is just laughable.

You're missing the point.

Why would a doctor in suburban Dallas want to pay that much money for a crumbling hulk in Detroit?

It leads to other speculation as well. Can they actually afford to buy/maintain the property? Does someone have plans to renovate it (which will be a big plus in Detroit's so-called comeback)?
