Northville and Plymouth are very similar in many ways. Northville tends to be a little quieter and a little smaller than Plymouth do have nice walkable downtowns. Both are good options and under most circumstances a good commute to Dearborn. However, it will be a mess in 2014 when I-96 is closed through Livonia.

The noise/traffic/crowd thing for Royal Oak is only really an issue if you live directly adjacent to downtown. If you live more than 5 blocks way its really a non-issue.

Ann Arbor to Dearborn is a very do-able commute, particularly if you live close to I-94 or US-23. The traffic is usually more predictable and consistent along I-94 and shorter timewise during rush hour than probably trying to go to Royal Oak.

The downtown areas of Northville / Plymouth tend to more suited for families and the 30+ crowd.

Downtown Royal Oak is kind of the opposite of Northville/Plymouth, with a downtown more suited for the twenty-something social scene and less for the families/35+ crowd.

Ann Arbor has more broad appeal for everyone and has a completely different feel than the rest of Southeastern Michigan because of the university environment and people that it draws from around the world.
