Baltimore is actually the most dangerous city in the US, and it's also the abandoned building capital of the country.

These titles are based on magazine articles. I believe Detroit "won" the title this year, but Baltimore, St. Louis, and NO have "won" in years past.

i can definantly believe the best sports town, ya ya the detroit lions suck. and who knows if they will get better, but ford field is the largest nfl stadium in the nation, and ranked nicest facility, not just that, but the pistons are on a role, they have been to so many nba finals and go far into the playoffs just about every year. 2 times in a row they faced the Lakers for the final match. the tigers are doing well to, went to the world series not to long ago, didnt win, but they did alot to get there.

and the most reconized team in detroit, hockeytown USA, Detroit Redwings, as i know, 11 stanley cups and you never go out in public without hearing about the Redwings victory last night. at least it was like that in 2004 when i was there.

HUGE sports town indeed.

its dangerous relative to other US cities, not dangerous as in a place where you have to fear for your life whenever you are there. as a detroit citizen i fear my stuff getting stolen and property damage more than i feared being a victim of violent crime. just stay out of the street life and you'll have very little to worry about. and i'd bet my next paycheck that NO is the most dangerous/troubled city in the country; even before Katrina it was in the top 3 for most violent crimes for a number of years. Since then their murder rate has gone from terrible to absolutely absurd.

and is it me or do we get a lot of attention from the NYT? The notoriety in this case is good i guess.

you can find strip malls anywhere in the country. nobody is gonna visit the region to go to Hall Rd, lol.

which is why the region needs to invest where the character, history, and architecture is, which includes Downtown, Midtown, New Center, Mexicantown/SW (very tourist friendly these days), Corktown, Eastern Market, etc.

who knows, maybe our next mayor will actually make an attempt to calm city/suburb relations unlike Kwame, aka Coleman Young 2.0

Nothing against Hall Rd., but it ain't no Miracle Mile or 5th Avenue. Illimatic has a point in that even if the retailers and entertainment venues are much the same as, say, the Somerset Collection, they would be a much bigger draw in an architecturally attractive and historical location like downtown. Imagine all the empty storefronts on Woodward or Washington Blvd. filled with the likes of Gucci, Williams & Sonoma, FAO Schwartz and Wolfgang Puck with a Hudsons "anchor" a la Sachs. 5th Ave. Now that would be cool... (even if I personally couldn't afford it!)

THesegoto11 can you back up your claims that Baltimore is both the city that's most dangerous and has the most abandoned buildings? I believe you're wrong and there are stats on here demonstrating that but I know you wouldn't be just making that up so please list some sources.

I can answer the question about how Detroit can be both the Most dangerous and yet be a great place to visit.

I plan to visit because I love old buildings- I love to try and picture what America was when I was younger or during my parent's lives. I find a strange attraction to architectural ruins- maybe its not so strange people flock to the Mayan and Aztec ruins. I look at pictures and see buildings that when they get cheaper ( and I get crazier) I might consider buying and using for a summer home.

I don't understand the confusion.

Washington, DC used to be the murder capital of the U.S., yet it still drew millions of visitors to the Smithsonian and monuments. Now, DC has invested in transit and revived many of those neighborhooods.

Detroit is a great place to visit, but can also be dangerous in many areas.

The notion that Hall Road is anything but an abysmal suburban sprawl disaster is laughable. You can get that anywhere in the country. The key is to figure out what makes Detroit itself unique as a destination of culture and entertainment.

Because it isn't the most dangerous city, I believe that honor now belongs to Charlston, SC.
