Hi.

My wife and I are in early 50's and are looking for an apartment between Farmington Hills and Troy.
I will be working in Farmington Hills and my wife will be staying home. We will be visiting Troy 2 or 3 times a week.

I am worried that my wife would be bored staying home.

Which areas between Farmington Hills and Troy have apartments near stores, restaurants, theaters, and other cultural places?

Thanks.

The downtowns along the woodward corridor (Ferndale, Berkley, Royal Oak, Birmingham) will be fairly convenient to both places and have the cultural amenities/walkability that you're looking for

Does your wife want to have these places within walking distance, or is she willing to drive a bit? Birmingham might be good if she strongly wants to be able to walk to shops and restaurants, etc. It's a pricey place to live though, and not sure about the availability of apartments. The commute might not be pleasant for you during rush hour. It depends on what you're both willing to trade off on.

gameguy56 - Thanks. I was not sure what you meant by the woodward corridor at first but now I know thanks to Wikipedia. I will be making a trip to the area in a near future and I will check the area.

mgkeith - Thanks. My wife would not mind if she had to drive a bit but would prefer walking to driving. I will also check the Birmingham area.

OP, I have to add--I live in Farmington Hills and find plenty to do here! . It really depends on what exactly you are both looking for. Very best of luck to you both!

I second ferndale or royal oak. Around the farmington hills area is plain and a half a** suburb feel.

if your wife wants to live somewhere she can walk to stores and coffee, Birmingham is best. Farmington Hills is suburbia, you cannot survive without a car.

I know a lot of women who are similar age to your wife who don't work and live in the suburbs. Do you have kids?
Hopefully if your wife takes a class or something she can meet people.
I think there a few apartment communities in Birmingham that you could walk to downtown. I have seen many home rentals though depending on your budget.
