Downtown Detroit's the safest area in the Detroit city, AFAIK, along with Midtown. The rest of the city's a basket case, more or less.

There is a phenomenon of "good neighborhood next to bad one" in Houston but overall Houston city is financially healthier and safer than Detroit city because it has the luxury of being able to annex new land and therefore hold onto its tax base.

There are "family style" upper class neighborhoods in Houston zoned to "good public schools" that are close to Downtown. Even though these neighborhoods are laid out suburban style they are thought of as "city neighborhoods".

The Houston Chinatown is car-oriented. It is near some bad areas of Alief so I wouldn't be surprised that some robberies happen sometimes.

Houston has a Chinatown which is a huge plus. There are so many Chinese restaurants. But you need to be extra careful when you walk there because almost everyday people got robbed.

Well, I guess you just can't have it all unless you can afford those high-rise luxury condo in midtown or uptown Houston. With that, you can enjoy both city life and safety.
