I think the OP should be aware that all of the responses we are giving are viable options. SE Michigan has the advantage of many nice suburbs that also have "small-scale urban" areas, all within a short distance of each other! There are few bad choices when you go a bit north of Detroit. I would check Wikipedia and read a little about each of the suburbs. It will give you an idea of the demographics and histories of the cities, and what the culture is like today.

If you have no kids, this would be the perfect time to live downtown if you've ever wanted to try that. Then move to the suburbs after you have kids.
