A good darkhorse candidate is Clawson. It can be a little too strip-mally in some areas, but there is a downtown and both housing costs and taxes are reasonable. Most importantly, in my opinion, it has a fantastic location. You can easily get to RO, Birmingham, I-75, Troy, etc.

I think the OP should be aware that all of the responses we are giving are viable options. SE Michigan has the advantage of many nice suburbs that also have "small-scale urban" areas, all within a short distance of each other! There are few
bad choices when you go a bit north of Detroit. I would check Wikipedia and read a little about each of the suburbs. It will give you an idea of the demographics and histories of the cities, and what the culture is like today.
