O K, you Detroiters -- both present and among the "diaspora". I need some help in identifying a non-fiction work on the city.

The work (pretty good-sized, the better part of a thousand pages) was written sometime in the Sixties; whether before, during or after the troubles of '67 I'm not sure. It concerned three families transplanted to the city, -- one from upstate, one from Eastern Europe, and one from the Agrarian South. The name "Conant" rings a bell in my memory, but the author was not Harvard President James B Conant.

Thanks in advance for any possible help.

I assume you google'd or bing'd. One other place you might try is: Library of Congress Home | Library of Congress
The Library of Congress site.

I tried some quick google and bing and loc searches, but to no avail. When you find it--or you remember some more details--please report back. I'm sure we'd all love to know about it.

Do you remember any Chapter titles? Strange keywords? Nicknames of people?

Maybe an amazon search: http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&key...l_1ujlbzfohr_b

I'm pretty sure you are looking for "American Odyssey," by Robert E. Conot. It's not a thousand pages but it's big, 735 pages.

Here's a nutshell review of the book:

I read it a long time ago. Conot's thesis is about the relationship between the technology changes brought about by the rise of the Detroit auto industry and changes in society particularly the working class. I thought this was a very good book. Even though it was written awhile ago, it gives a lot of historical detail that explains why Detroit has turned out to be like it is today.

It's still in print and you can find it on Amazon and other sites.
