When I lived in Detroit I would just hop in the car and drive under the tunnel and be at casino Windsor in ten minutes. It's extremely close and fun if you are looking for a change of pace. There are casino's in Detroit though so you don't have to travel to Windsor if you don't want to, but they are all very near one another so hitting all of them in one night wouldn't be a problem at all!

Motorvilleboy you and your links rock. A very concise informative post. I think I'm going to have to steal this with your permission for another online community I belong too.

I so appreciate people who know that Detroit may have it's challenges but still has a living, breathing life occurring every day. A life that is defined by more than the idiot mayor, the slightly inept governor, and the consistent bashing.

Good blessings

Can you live in Canada and still have US Detroit license plates?

Thanks for the info? Anymore? When is the best time to visit?

Paddington, those pictures are stunning!

I love Detroit, the links provided by the previous poster should set you up with plenty to do. I live in the city, and I spend my weekends downtown enjoying music, restuarants, and just being out in the city. There is a thread on here where people list their favorite restaurants, that's worth checking out. I'm in agreement with most of these recommendations.

To answer your first question I think it is physically possible but not exactly legal. You will need friends in Canada to help out on that one as well.

For your second question: As much as I actually like winter, I honestly cannot recommend it to others as a season to visit Detroit UNLESS the North American Int'l Auto Show, hockey, basketball, skating on Campus Martius or the Winterblast appeal to you. Otherwise it gets pretty bleak though I think the snow makes everything look pretty. All three other seasons are great, and generally a bit cooler and less muggy than metro NY (that is where you're from, right?). One bonus for us east-coasters (I'm originally from New England) is that the sun sets really late in summer because Michigan is actually in the eastern time zone and thus on the western edge of it - a lot of people not familiar with the state do not know this, but for someone who grew up with 8:30 sunsets in midsummer the 9 pm+ sunsets are great.
