I've been looking for somewhere where I can walk or cycle to the Renaissance Center for about $550 a month?

I walk about the same pace as Google Maps and commute of about an hour & a half by foot are acceptable. Cyle commutes of 45 minutes are good too.

Buses could be used to extend my commuting distance as I found then to be safe enough. This might be because I'm 6'2" and not easily scared.

However how can I balance price, safety and distance? I'm prepared to live frugally, I'm from a working-class background, but I want no dealings with crime, drugs and cockroaches.

Any suggestions?

Try the Park Avenue House in Downtown Detroit on Park Avenue. They have studio apartments for as low as $450.

The Historic Park Avenue House - Downtown Living

The Rosemary, a small apartment building on Prentis in the "Midtown" area rents small studios for $300
Midtown – North Cass - Live Midtown | Live Midtown

The Live Midtown website has other "for rent" housing listings

Your best bet is to look at apartments east near Jefferson and the water. The Riverwalk now goes all the way from Ren Cen to two blocks before Belle Isle - so you can easily bike/walk without fear of traffic/pedestrians/broken glass and it's lit/under video camera - so no safety issues. Good luck!

Look at all the apartments around Van Dyke/Jefferson area - they'll be in your price points.
