Other than very high profile performances that come through town, I haven't heard much of paid acting opportunities in the metro-Detroit area. I wasn't able to find a lot through internet searches or by asking around, either. I don't have the experience to audition for anything very high profile, but I'd be happy to consider lower caliber paid acting opportunities (theater or film). I really have no idea how to begin.

Any suggestions?

The state has been cutting back on film subsidies so high profile movies more or less were just a one time thing. They may still come around, if Detroit if popular enough on its own. But for now, the movie industry hasn't really been in Michigan long enough to form anything lasting.

This year, the state is looking at the possibility of axing film subsidies completely so you just might be better off looking for opportunities in other states. If you stay local, at most you'll probably just end up as a background character in low-budget indie movies, commercials, or music videos.

Do like I did and find some online agencies like Actorsaccess.com or Exploretalent.com. Every once in a while I would get a call from them telling me about opportunities paying anywhere from a few hundred to a couple thousand.

The other replies are accurate. The only other way to do it is to pull a Jeff Daniels. He maintains his primary residence in Chelsea, MI but it's obvious that he traveled frequently to LA & NYC early in his career to get to where he is today. Check out his Wikipedia entry:

"Did you know that Detroit is home to the second largest theatre district in the United States behind only New York City's? And when you add the theatre activity in the surrounding metro area, Detroit's offerings become that much more impressive. Detroit offers everything from first-run Broadway musicals to classic Shakespeare and venues range in size from the 192-seat Century Theatre to the 5,000-seat Fox Theatre. Adding to the experience is that many of these historic theatres have been restored to, and in some cases beyond, their original grandeur. Below we list Detroit's most prominent theatres with the most expansive offerings. But don't forget to check the local entertainment guides for some of the smaller and more intimate venues."

Does that help?

In the new show "Empire" that comes on Fox (a really good show btw), there is a very cute little girl who recently appeared in a few episodes and plays as one of the main characters daughter who lives in Detroit. I don't know the details exactly but I have some mutual friends who knows her family. How her parents got her this role is unclear but I wish I knew.
