7 years ago I rented an apartment with a boyfriend whom became abusive. I left the apartment 6months into the lease because of the abuse that was going on.

Both of us signed that lease

Now 7years later I am being sued for the rent owed which Yes I won't mind paying half but how can I get the debt split between the two of us that were on that lease or should I just calk it up as another negative in the horrible things I had to deal with from that relationship? And pay it all myself?

This is not legal advice....

But Since you signed the lease they can go after one or both of you, but each of you are equally responsible for paying the terms under the lease.

Is the lease debt with-in your states statues of limitation for debt, for them to file on it?

If it is you need to pay, They probably filed against you cause they could find you, and not him.

I will be serving him with the papers as well his name is on it and I gave them his address as well. And his work address.

I guess I will just try to set up payment plans because I am a single mother with no help. the fact that this is from 7 years ago I thought they could not go after it but?

Lakeshore Legal Aid

You might want to talk to someone @ one of the free legal aid org's, one I found in Goggle search is above.

This would be the worse thing that you could do. If you make a payment, you could open up the statute of limitations. See if you can get some free legal advice. If not, a quick consultation with an attorney would be helpful. They may have no legal way to sue you now to recover the debt, if so much time has passed. A typical ploy is to try to trick you into acknowledging and paying on a long-overdue debt. Don't sign or pay anything (you probably shouldn't even talk to them). They likely already know that they can't collect from you unless you voluntarily start a payment plan with them.
