Good evening everyone. I am planning on moving next summer from the St. Louis Mo area and Chicago and Detroit is on my list for possible cities. I am 28 years old and a single parent of a 4 year old daughter. I would like to find out what safe and affordable neighborhoods/cities I should to move to? I am looking to spend no more than $1600-$1700 a month on a place. I am mainly concerned with the schools, safe neighborhoods, and affordability on apartments. Any helpful information is great!

Where will you be working? That will determine where you should be looking. You should be able to find something in almost any part of metro detroit in that price range.

I assumed you wanted something 2 bedroom. Any other specifics? Things you want to be near? rent a house, apartment, or duplex? Near your job? ect. Right now with that price range and a 2 bedroom you have alot of options. That's why we have to narrow it down.

I will be working at the VA regional office. I am looking for a 2 or 3 bedroom not far from grocery stores, shopping, etc. I am looking to rent either an apartment or house. Public transportation nearby is a plus (I do drive as well). I wanted to be in an area where I don't have to worry about the schools, crime (eventhough I know it will be everywhere, just want it at a minimum), and family friendly.

Grosse Pointe City/Grosse Pointe Park would be place I would look. They have great schools, a low crime rate, and you should be able to find a rental in your price range. They have their own downtowns for grocery stores/shopping and you're also pretty close to Downtown Detroit.

St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit ... Interesting choice of all place you could choose to live, considering what those 3 have in common ...

St Clair Shores would be nice too if you want to go slightly cheaper yet still desirable. Only three miles from GP.

St. Clair Shores no longer has the most desirous of public school systems. (It actually has 3 decent school systems)

I would look into Troy. It has one decent shopping mall, one phenomenal shopping mall, plenty of restaurants, excellent public schools, and you can take the SMART bus route 475 from Troy to within a block of the VA Hospital. As GameGuy56 stated, you should consider the Grosse Pointes - SMART Bus route 610 will take you from St. Clair Shores and the Grosse Pointes to within a block of the VA Hospital.

Was St. Clair Shores ever a desirable school district? As far as I know, it was always just average. Not cream of the crop, but not bad either.
