So I was reading an article about Apple possibly opening in downtown Detroit but one of the reasons it hasn't happened yet is that our downtown isn't a 24/7 downtown yet. My question for you guys is this: Other than New York City obviously, how many downtowns in the US truly fit that 24/7 criteria? Chicago probably, but I really can't think of any others.

What does being a 24/7 downtown have to do with Apple opening a store? The 4 locations in SE Michigan are all in suburban malls that close at 9 PM.

You don't need a 24/7 downtown for a store that closes at 9pm. There's only one store I know of that's open 24/7 and that's on 5th ave in Manhattan. The other 5 in Manhattan closes at 9pm at the latest.

Could Detroit be close to getting an Apple Store?

This quote was in the article: "There's a heck of a lot more activity than there use to be, but we're still not a viable 24-hour downtown," said Jim Bieri, a principal at Stokas Bieri Real Estate. "We're making strides, but we're not there yet. Could we be there in five years - yes."

Okay, but that has nothing to do with Apple. Apple as a retailer would be more concerned with income demographics. Not whether there's other things to do past 2 AM.

A 24/7 downtown would indicate a vibrant, populated city center filled with lots of people that make real good money.

But most Apple stores close at 9pm and are located in suburban malls.

Most downtowns are pretty quiet in the evenings and on weekends.

It depends on what business you have. For a bar/nightclub/specialty restaurant/other entertainment venue, sure.

But for most retail establishments, like whatever chain or department store, they aren't typically 24 hours and honestly most stores that are 24 hours are big box stores or drive thrus that you won't find in many downtown areas. At least not the supposed 24/7 ones.

A 24/7 downtown is probably more indicative of the fact that a particular area has a bunch of young people with disposable income.

I can't imagine that Apple would open a store or not based on people who might wander in to buy something at 4:30AM. I've lived in Manhattan, and yes, there's always something going on 24/7. But things really do slow down a bit late at night. Maybe it's just that Apple wants to be in a vibrant area. If that's the case, Miami Beach? San Francisco?
