All of Michigan will never look like Detroit, god some people are stupid. Detroit's reputation has gotten worn out, people already know it's decayed more than the average city. I'm tired of hearing about it.

Perhaps a huge bit slanted.

I kept waiting for the second half of the videos where they show the nice parts of Detroit, the beautiful architecture in some parts of the city. Where is the video of the lively and fun areas like Eastern Market? Or the nice areas like Indian Villiage, downtown, etc?

From the videographer himself:

Quote:
"Like ANY city, Detroit has it's good and bad areas... these are the bad areas. THAT IS THE POINT OF THIS VIDEO, to show the worst ares of Detroit. Every city has rundown neighborhoods, but no city I have ever seen or heard of in the US is as bad as Detroit, at least when it comes to the PHYSICAL DETERIORATION of the buildings and infrastructure that make up the CITY of Detroit.

"I HAVE NO INTENTIONS TO FILM NICE AREAS OF DETROIT, so please, keep those comments to yourself. If YOU think that would actually make an interesting video, then do it yourself." (emphasis added)
I'm sure you two have similar complaints about the one-sided slant of materials put out by, say, the city's tourism bureau? "This is slanted, it only shows the nice parts of Detroit, why don't they show the ghetto parts, blah blah blah..."

The whole point of this forum is to not keep comments to myself. Sorry if you are offended. I'm just speaking my opinion. It is not meant to be a direct attack on you.

I don't know about the first video; the videographer for the second and third video claims they were made in 2002-2003 and 2006, respectively.

I don't get the point of your opinion when the person candidly admits straight away that he is presenting a slanted view of Detroit, and then you go and complain that he is presenting a slanted view of Detroit. You and everyone else were put on notice right upfront, so what's your issue? I also don't understand why the onus is on the videographer to present the parts of Detroit that you think he should. That's not his obligation. Like the fellow said, if that's what you want from a video, go do it yourself.

If nothing else, there's a couple of photo sets of the "other side" of Detroit that someone posted around here, though I can't remember where.

EDIT: Here it is...

This is the reason why you don't see nice cars in bad neighborhoods in Detroit:

Back in the 90's, I worked with a guy who lived in Detroit and had a good paying job (network admininistrator) in the suburbs. He drove the latest Mustang convertible with all the options, got a new one every two years.

He once told me that he actually had a beater car that he kept in a garage about a mile away from where he actually lived. After work, he would drive from the office to the garage in Detroit, park his Mustang, and then drive his beater car the mile back to his apartment. In the morning, he'd drive the beater out to the garage, drop it off, and then drive the Mustang to work.

The reason that he gave for this was that if he left his Mustang near his house, it would get stolen ... just a matter of time before it happened.

That's how my neighborhood looks like on 6mile and Gratiot...nothing but burned down houses and vacant lots with crackheads walking up and down the block trying to score a hit of rock. What you guys saw in the movie 8mile is nothing like the real Detroit that you witnesses on youtube. This is why Detroit is the most dangerous, murderous and miserable city according to Forbes. There is nothing here but crime. However, I'm still proud to be a Detroiter, is that wrong?
