Hysteria? Oh, I beg to differ, I know the area VERY well. Please stop giving a false sense of security to a concerned parent. Thank you. A Female Apartment Manager was just found MURDERED IN HER APARTMENT BY WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY. AT THE SHERATON COURT (sp?) APTS ON SECOND. Is THAT close enough? I agree we are both entitled to our own opinions. But I find your comment about mass gang raping a little misleading, but perhaps you misunderstood me. I was not saying there was gang rapes ON CCS campus. I was saying that with all the abandoned areas of Detroit, it is simply easier for a group of men to SNATCH AND GRAB a young girl (perhaps walking out of that grocery store all alone) and whisk her away. Once again, I have never said that the entire city is bad, I have said that it has much more "bad" area than any other city. Which is true. It is also rated the NUMBER ONE most dangerous city. I didn't make up those numbers, the FBI did. Please don't shoot the messenger! |

47%-49& of Detroit is illiterate, it is another sad fact. I would like to see the city address this problem, but they do not. Many in power use it to their advantage, which is also pretty sad. |

All the bolding and comments indeed reek of hysteria. I notice you totally passed over me debunking your previous post about walking through a ghetto to grocery shopping. If you don't even know where the grocery store is....how well can you really know the area? It's been there for many many years. First hand experience on the WSU area from Acupunk and myself seem to trump your agenda. I believe you would have much better luck with your links and hysteria in a thread concerning Detroit as a whole. |

I didn't live on campus, I lived in the neighborhood as did all my friends, the police work off campus as well. I'm speaking specifically of being a student living in the Wayne State area and being safe. You keep posting stats for the entire city which I agree has many dangerous areas and terrible schools which I'm sure is part of the literacy problem.
It's easy for a guy in Royal oak to drop a roofie in a girls drink that doesn't mean it's going to happen or all girls have to live in fear of drinking anything, but they do need to use common sense everywhere they go. Crime happens everywhere, A crime near WSU was posted, well there was also a double murder in a north suburb. We have no info on either crime so I don't think it's wise for anyone to flee WSU or White lake township in fear for their lives. Last edited by detshen; 02-21-2008 at 07:04 PM. |

Yep, there is a grocery store, a lot of restaurants, museums and libraries and downtown close by. My college experience was anything but a tiny bubble. How would a commuter student know? I lived there and I walked everywhere. It was wonderful.

Have you spent much time near CCS? You realize its in the shadow of the Detroit Institute of the Arts, Charles Wright Museum, Detroit Science Center and a condo redevelopement to name a few right? I admittedly did not spend a ton of time between the freeway and the north side of CCS. But from my few bike rides to check out the area for a possible rooming situation...I saw nothing resembling a war zone with bands of rapists and robbers. I did see a park though. A young girl can be grabbed at any grocery store if someone is determined. The parking lot for the market and shops near campus is not very big and is decently busy. I hope that if some loon decided to abduct her that some of the people coming out of the shops in the center next to the grocery store would say something. If not that....I hope that one of the people coming down Warren or the service drive for the freeway would atleast honk their horn. Also...the grocery store didn't stay open that late when I shopped their several times a month. There you go harping on the most dangerous city thing. But we are talking about the area around WSU. Is that cited as a bad area on an FBI study? You are reaching big time. |

It's probably more to do with the bad rap that the entire force has received for a ton of reasons. Illiteracy is indeed sad. The numbers are disputable though. I can guarantee that they didn't talk to everyone in the city. ** I had a much longer and detailed response but lost it somehow.* ![]() |

I didn't pass over it. I figured that the mere fact that you said you had ONE grocery store to choose from spoke for itself. I was finished posting on this thread. I am entitled to my opinion and I gave it to a parent who is probably the same age as me and may see things my way. Or may not. Either way, I wish them the best. ![]() P.S. I have two nephews that go to WSU and live in Macomb County and I have personally taken several classes there over the past three years. Last edited by Sunvixen; 02-22-2008 at 01:28 AM. Gosh, I can't imagine WHY the store didn't stay open later!? Was the area too dangerous? So what happens if it is 3 AM and you need really some medicine? Do you drive to 8 Mile Rd? Uh, yes...I certainly hope they would "AT LEAST HONK THEIR HORN" too! Because we all know that will really help! I don't think I need to add anymore here. I think that spoke VOLUMES. |
