Detroit won't become what it was again. Not only is the dominance of the automobile era ending (more and more people are minimizing their use of cars), anybody who understands the basic principles of capitalism knows that it moves like water to the lowest point (i.e. cheapest costs).

Today in China there are large cities thriving on building one thing like Detroit did - telephones, computers, whatever. In a few decades these cities will be like Detroit if they don't wise up sooner when the industrial economy moves on to the next unindustrialized frontier. Imagining that Detroit will someday be what it was is like hoping a 20-year (U.S.) can compete with a 13-year old (China) for number of inches grown in a year. The only way that fully-grown adult will compete is horizontally with excess fat - which is what we are doing as a society.

It is time for we in the post-industrial U.S. to evolve beyond external growth and begin focusing on the frontiers within our consciousness. Only then will you see Detroit rise with an entirely new purpose of creating unheard of technologies, moving beyond the gradient between capitalism and socialism into an economy that serves all, and moving beyond dependence on government to solve problems.

Who the heck is scared of a city. Really people need to realize that as Detroit goes down, the suburbs go down, and I hope people have the money to leave the state since they hate the city so much, and for those from the city, drop the charade because you know you love Detroit, no matter how many problems it has. So yes people need to stop sterotyping the city. Mainly about it's crime because I will get out me car and walk through Detroit to get to work without a fear in this world, because I know what is and what isn't and I won't get robbed or killed just walking down the street. Thats like fearing all inner cities like St. Louis, New York, Las Angelous, and by that I mean Brooklyn, Watts, and whatever part of Saint Louis that's with crime issues cause it may be all of it. People shouldn't exaggerate either. Take pride in Detroit because eventually it will set an example for suburbs like it once did.

The people on this forum I respect are the ones who know this, but are able to see the positives parts of the city, share this information with others, patronize city businesses, talk to the people and become involved in any small way they can. Are the people doing all the complaining supporting city businesses? Are they spending time teaching people to read or volunteering at any organization dedicated to helping the people of this city? People are writing about what they feel are the solutions, but if their only action is writing it's worse than useless, it's hurtful.
You said a mouthful, my friend.

Default Bye Bye DETROIT CITY...??

I have taught in the city--3 years.

I have lived in the city---6 years

I have:
dined in Detroit
had picnics on Belle Isle
Watched the fireworks for 20 years from behind COBO HALL
Yelped at the Hoe-Down
Embraced Hart Plaza
played softball with Derrick Coleman in the city
Walked the streets of Cass Avenue anytime of the day and night
Handed out food on Christmas day on Michigan Avenue
Volunteered in numerous programs in the city
Laughed
Celebrated
Cried
with the city for 20 plus years

Now I wave good-bye
and PRAY for the city

I love and miss dearly

Afraid it may never again be
What it once WAS
A world CLASS city
Which none other could be compared
None dared even be an equal

I love and miss
The city I knew
It pains me now
To see it crumble

GIVE UP THE WAR AGAINST SUBURBIA!
Allow the people to heal the city
It must not be a fight of color
For surely the city will simply die

If we push one group out
Simply to prove our point
Isolation is NOT survival
Desperation will not justify our fear

It was a world CLASS city
Now it suffers from CLASS warfare
How full is my glass?
Will that matter when the city's gone?

What will matter
100 years from now?
That I was BLACK
Or maybe even WHITE?

All that counts
Is the legacy of DETROIT
Will it be continued?
Or do we euthanize it NOW!?
