Abick's is a bar on the corner of Dennis and Gilbert, right around the block from Cicotte. Been in the same family for something like 80 years. It's like walking into a time capsule. The bar is pretty much exactly the way it is in pictures on the wall from the 20's or 30's. It's like the last scene from "The Shining" when you realize that Jack was at the New Year's party at the Overlook Hotel many years ago.

To be any help to you we would need to know cross streets because some of the streets you name cross the city for miles.
I personally live in Southwest Detroit and it's not perfect, but it's damn near close. We have several grocery stores in the neighborhood, 4 within 1 mile to be exact, and they are real grocery stores, not liquor stores with high prices for the little food they carry. This is unusual in Detroit, which has been called by academics a food wasteland, ie. it's very difficult to find good fresh food, especially produce within the city limits.
Some area's of Southwest are a little rougher than others, but the area they call Hubbard Farms is pretty nice, many home owners as opposed to renters. Be warned it is a mostly Hispanic area with a little sprinkling of Caucasian and African American. If you are not a tolerant person, used to living amongst folks from another ethnic group, don't bother. If you are, this could be a better than average neighborhood for you. One last note, Southwest Detroit in the 2000 census was the only area of Detroit that showed population growth.

Are you really sure that you want to live within the City of Detroit itself instead of living out in the suburbs? Aside from having to deal with crime and awful schools, you'll also have to pay a city income tax. Choose carefully because this could turn out to be a life-or-death decision or a decision that will result in a break-in, etc.

Lauder Street is a neighborhood street that runs parellel to Greenfield Road and is about 2 or 3 blocks east of Greenfield Road. I have an aunt and uncle who lives in an stately 1940's colonial on Lauder just south of Seven Mile. Lauder Street and the other north-south running neighborhood streets, in the vicinity of Greenfield, Schaefer, and Hubbell, from MCNICHOLS (not Six Mile Road) to Eight Mile Road are nice, mostly well-maintained brick colonials, ranches, bungalows, and some duplexes from the 1920's to 1950's.
Prices are very low for some foreclosed houses, but you may have to deal with subpar city services like police.
I don't know much about the other streets you named though.

Well, I'm PRETTY sure I'd like to live in the city....I lived in Fremont California and South San Francisco and LOVED it. However, I have seen really bad areas of the cities too, and want to avoid that in Detroit! I really appreciate all the help everyone is giving me. The house on Lauder Street IS very nice, and is located almost at the end of the street near the I-96.

I don't think you'll like living near I-96 and Lauder. I'm beginning to think you're pulling our legs. In this real estate market when you have so much to choose from, why would you even THINK about living near a freeway service drive....in Detroit?
