Well, because the house is a foreclosure, and a great price..also in very good condition. Lauder Street actually dead ends in that block, so it's not a through street to the freeway.

A dead end street in Detroit is just asking for trouble. I took a look on Google Street view of the corner of Plymouth Rd and Lauder (which has a light btw) and it's pretty ugly.

Uhm...this is Detroit and not San Francisco nor Fremont. I don't know much about Fremont (though I think I stayed in a Motel 6 there once), but Detroit and San Francisco are so different that it's hard to mention them together in a single sentence.
I strongly suggest that you give this a tremendous amount of thought and make sure that you have good reasons for wanting to live in one of the poorest and most dangerous cities in the nation. If you're doing this out of a sense of altruism, consider checking your premises.

Don't do it. And if you insist on attaching that millstone to your neck and jumping into the river, at least wait until a nice hot July or August evening and take a walk around that neighborhood. Trust me, the market will still be a disaster then, and you can take your pick from the pool of cheap houses. Don't be tricked by the "You can own your own house for cheaper than rent" advertisements. Yeah, you can, but it's not worth it for many houses in many areas. DON'T DO IT!!! The north side of Lauder doesn't dead end at the freeway, it runs into Fullerton, which turns into the service drive. The SOUTH end of Lauder does dead end....Into an industrial area.....The garbage and debris will collect at that dead end, you'll be hearing semi trucks all day and night, and anyone running from the cops will run through there to get away if they can. Abandonned cars tend to collect in such areas, and in the summer, you'll be unable to avoid the smell of diesel fuel. They should GIVE you a house like that just to get someone to pay the taxes. You'll be sooooorrrrryyyy.....

Oh my...
I tell ya what. If you want, I know a couple people who might be willing to TRADE you a house in Detroit for a house in San Francisco. I may have to pull a few strings...but if you REALLY want to move here, I'm willing to help out!
You did mean Detroit, MICHIGAN, right?
Why on earth would you........
Nevermind

Ummmm? A "great" place?
The St John's area USED to be very nice, but I think much of that area has declined in the past few years.
I have relatives around there trying for over 2 years to sell their homes for next to nothing. One has a drug house right next door.
Try Grosse Pointe Park if you really want that area.

SOUTH San Francisco people. It's not in San Francisco any more than East St. Louis is in St. Louis. South SF is a separate town right next to the airport and beautiful Colma - not the Golden Gate or rolling hills of North Beach. There are plenty of areas of metro Detroit that approximate South SF - Wynadotte, Romulus, St. Claire Shores. In the city, it will generally be denser, but if you have your heart set on the city, the areas near Grosse Pointe on the east side might be what you're looking for.

Ohhhhhhhh. SOUTH SF. Thanks for clearing that up. FYI: I happen to think St Clair Shores is quite a decent, safe place to live.

I don't know if anyone who reads this forum remembers the poster named "Need An Affordable Home" (NAH) from discussions in some of the other forums, but do you think that would stop him from buying one of those cheap Detroit homes? Last I heard he was thinking about buying a house in Oil City, Pennsylvania.
