I have looked at homes on Lauder St, Chalfonte St, Mendota St, and Belvidere St. Kind of all over the city! Are any of these in a especially dangerous part of the city? I liked all of them, and from what I could see in the little bit of time I was there, the areas were all very similiar.

Those streets don't strike me as Indian Village or Warrendale or any part of Detroit I'd particularly like to live.
Lauder Street seems to run between Schaefer and Greenfield. Nowhere I'd want to be. Chalfonte maybe near Telegraph would be livable. Mendota Street seems to run between Schaefer and Wyoming. Also nowhere I'd like to be. Belvidere Street seems to be near Mack and E Grand Blvd. Good Lord! I'm not sure what level of risk you welcome in where you live, but I'd certainly not want to be in any of these neighborhoods. Go to Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowed and search Detroit and look at the different neighborhoods you can select. Take a look at Warrendale, Indian Village, Corktown, and there's been a few other decent ones mentioned. These are probably your best bet in the city of Detroit where it would be a little safer to be. My main problem in living in Detroit is the horrible city services, no matter how decent the house or neighborhood may be. Last edited by Yac; 03-04-2008 at 02:41 AM. |

Don't know anything about Belvidere, but I wouldn't want to buy a house on any of the other ones...Especially "ChalfonTAY".
I wouldn't even want to live in Warrendale anymore. Downtown, that's about it. Anywhere else is either too expensive or too otherwise undesirable. Get 5 or 6 roomates and buy a big house in Sherwood Forest or Palmer Woods. Taxes and utilities would still probably kill you once you made the mortgage payment. |

I thought it was pronounced, Shal-font. Definitely one of the more well known Detroit ghetto streets.

Depends who you're talking to.....Friend of mine lived on Cicotte (SEE-kott). I used to hear it called "Coyote" fairly regularly. It was near LIVER-noise.....

I used to have a friend whose family lived on Mendota. From the street the houses looked pretty good on her section of the block, but the area by McNichols (cross street) was iffy. Her family also had problems with people trying to break into/steal their cars. I haven't been over there in 9 years so I have no idea what it's like now.

She used to walk all over. She never was afraid of the neighborhood. Not sure what Abick's is.
