Cars and driving are two of my passions. Having lived most of my life in areas hillier than Michigan, I've always been able to find a good road or two to enjoy carving up.
So, now that spring is near, my question is, are there any good driving roads in the metro area, say within an hour or two of the city? There are plenty of pretty areas whether driving along the lakes or through the woods and farm fields, but the roads all seem pretty straight. As far as I can tell the Chrysler fwy with its series of curves and grades between the Ford fwy and Big Beaver or thereabouts seems to be as entertaining as it gets. M-29 along Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair river also has a few curves, but are there any other suggestions? |

Good roads to do what? To motor around like James Bond in Monaco with a DB-5? To leisurely drive around with the top down as if you escaped from Shawshank prison? If it's the former, I'm not sure if anyone would want to give you idyllic roads in their backyard that you could carve up. As a parent, I sure wouldn't.

Ann Arbor Trail. I also like Southfield Rd for some reason coming off the freeway. Biddle Ave /Jefferson, though it can get ugly in parts. M-25 and M-29 through Northern Macomb and all of St. Clair County.

The road to Hell from Ann Arbor has some twisty hilly parts and can be fun in a roadster or other pavement hugging car, but be very very careful going over the hills, other playful drivers sometimes come over those hills partially in the wrong lane.
I remember some fun roads int he Irish Hills area, but I do not remember which ones, sorry. Really you just need to find a hilly area and then find some lakes. Roads are always twisty around lakes. |
