If you hate it so much, why do you stay?

Here's another vote for Grosse Ile. I guess I'm prejudiced since I live here . I came from California with my husband who was not too thrilled, but even he says it's the only place to be. Grosse Pointe's nice too, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't have the Up North feel to it like it does here on the island. The commute isn't bad, really, since you're going against traffic most of the time. The schools are super good, right up there on any list. And the prices are about as good as they're going to get right now. Lots of big backyards, water, water everywhere, small town atmosphere, local shopping. If it weren't for all the deer, everything would be perfect!

Oakland County is great, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, West Bloomfield, all great. Grosse Pointe is a great option if you're commuting downtown,

I almost purchased a house in Clarkston. It was beautiful. I think it is such a nice city. The only problem I would have had is the commute to my family that is all down in the RO, Ferndale, Livonia and Canton areas. Do you have issues with 75 during concerts and basketball games?

If you are communting to the Ren Cen, love the water and have kids in school than Grosse Pointe is by far the place that makes the most sense. There are houses at all price range and you will be able to find something nice in your budget.
Just to clarify on some of the earlier comments - each Grosse Pointe (there are five - Park, City, Farms, Woods & Shores) has it's own park (2 in GP Park) right on Lake St. Clair. Each park has swimming, tennis, etc. and a marina. At some parks there is a waitlist for boat wells. If you can't get into the Park right away there are plenty of other options nearby (St. Clair Shores or Detroit).
