Can anyone tell me about laws or zoning regarding keeping backyard chickens both in Detroit and suburbs, but especially within city limits of Detroit.

Also, some areas have bans regarding roosters specifically do you know?

Berkley just approved a chicken ordinance last month! - but it was very clear about roosters being banned. I believe Ferndale and Farmington Hills also permit chickens, as part of the ordinance was based on that of these towns. No idea what the case is in other towns. In general I think you'll find most urban/suburban areas ban chickens. Pretty hit or miss on if chickens are permitted. Usually based on if a citizen has pursued the right people to get the ordinance passed. Not many will keep them, in fact I don't know of a single house in Berkley or Ferndale witch chickens, but the option is there if you want.

I am not sure for our community. We used to have 18 chickens including two roosters. No one ever said anything if there is some regulation. I know we have a rule of 1 horse per acre. So maybe there is a rule about chickens per acre too.

Any sort of farm animals are allowed in Detroit, same as in the 1880s, as long as you have space and proper living conditions for them, barring the rooster ban.

I wonder how anyone is supposed to increase the flock without anyone in town owning a rooster? Do the roosters live in a separate condo in Grosse Pointe or what?

Ann Arbor allows 2 chickens ,no roosters, as long as your coop meets preset criteria.

You can have up to 6 chickens, no roosters, if the neighbors don't object. I think the process is you apply for 6 chickens, the city notifies neighbors and they have 20 days (?) or some such time frame to object. If they object your back to 2 chickens. If they don't object your good for 6.

Eastpointe allows 3 hens. You need a license.

Thanks for the replies everyone, very helpful. Looks like a hassle to have chickens, especially roosters who I think are more fun than hens at least in my experience.
