Default Best Suburb Areas?

We are a young married couple (late 20's)

We do not have kids. So schools aren't that important to me.

We are not looking to buy right now.

Hubby will be working at Wayne State Hospital. I will be continuing my education at Wayne State University. Still, we'd like to get away from the "college age" areas (too much trouble with that)

We'd like an area that's close enough for a short commute, yet still a quiet area.

With schools unimportant, I'd say consider Wyandotte. Great walkable downtown, unique homes, good people. Close drive to Detroit also. This area is more $100,000+ but above and below also.

There are also the perennial contenders, Royal Oak, Birmingham, Ferndale. Royal Oak and Ferndale can be very pricey, for a home anyway. You might get a condo there for what a house would cost in Ferndale or Wyandotte.

I have seen some great deals on some well kept up homes in Eastpointe and Harper Woods. Also both of the cities would be a good commute to the Wayne State Univ. area.

To have good doses of fun, easy commute, and quiet, look at Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak, Berkley, Beverly Hills, and Clawson. They are all pretty safe and have loads to do. If you want more quiet and secluded, I would look downriver or in Grosse Pointe. For something more like your average suburbia with subdivisions and big box stores galore, I would look at Troy, Livonia, Northville, Farmington Hills. Look around and you should get a sense of what suits your style.

Default Try Grosse Pointe Park

If you want a very short commute and a very quiet safe area that's affordable to rent in, Grosse Pointe Park has a very safe rental district in the west part of the Park called "the cabbage patch". You're right next to the high dollar homes and all of 10m surface street drive to Wayne St. The downside is that you are right next to Detroit proper, but after living here 2 years neither my roommate or me had any problems. Plus you get a park right on the water for residents only and many walking distance bars and restaurants. With our trophy winning economy you could get a super nice 2bdrm for 700$ easy. My 0.02$...
