My tips for a weekend in early December:

- Eastern Market (Gratiot Ave near the eastern end ramps to the I-75/the Fisher freeway) on Saturday morning/early afternoon -- better if it's a more moderate because, though the Market sheds themselves are under roof, it is open air, exposed to the elements. Also walking from shop-to-shop, restaurant-to-restaurant, beer-joint-to-beer-joint, mainly along Russell Street is a hoot. Lots of crowds.

- Hitsville (the Motown Museum) on Grand Ave -- the house/studio where many of the R&B giants of the 60s and early 70s were born (Diana Ross & the Spremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvine Gaye, the Temptations, etc.)... It may be closed for renovation/expansion, etc.

- MGM Grand casino. Maybe you aren't into to the casino thing, but if you could choose one... this one!

- Midtown -- you could do a whole day here; it's the hot, restored old (apartment, Victorian House) trendy area of Detroit just north of Downtown along/off of Woodward Ave, the city's main spine. Things to check out here. Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA to locals), Charles Wright African American museum, the theatre on Cass Ave at Wayne State U. (forget the name off hand); several cool/trendy restaurants along/off Woodward, Cass and 2nd Street.

Downtown --

- Greektown, Campus Martius (noted above)

- see a play at the Fox Theatre on Woodward, the lobby and stage are, in themselves, amazing.

-- grab a long dog at the Lafayette Coney Island -- it's a diner-ish Detroit tradition, usually busy.

- the Guardian Building -- yes it's an office building and its the weekend, but if you can somehow get in to see this fantastic Art Deco lobby, perhaps the best in the nation, DO IT...

Mexicantown, just to the SW of downtown, a few blocks just off Vernor street. Get your Mexican food feedbag on.

... speaking of Vernor, go to drugstore, supermarket or a restaurant and buy a sparkling Vernor's Ginger Ale; best ginger ale in America; can hardly find it anywhere than metro Detroit (Detroit, of course, is its home).

This weekend my wife (a Librarian) had a meet and greet for local authors. There was a neat book by a guy who went to all the Detroit bars and wrote up a description of them and photographs. I will get the name of it, it would be useful to you. It cost $20 though.

It is called "Watering Holes - Detroit Bars"
