I'm just going to list stuff in random fashion. At the risk of sounding like the chamber of commerce, you can, depending on when you're here and what you like:
-go to a hockey game
-go to a baseball game
-go to a football game
-go to a casino
-go see a broadway play
-go see the opera or symphony
-take the elevator up to the top of Ren Cen and take in the view
-while in the Ren Cen, go sit in all the GM cars with no salesperson there to harrass you
-take the legendary Rouge factory tour (technically not within city limits)
-walk the Riverwalk
-go to a brewpub (there are several in town)
-ice skate or hang out at Campus Martius
-take in live jazz or blues or go to a techno house
-go make some Pewabic pottery
-eat a Coney dog
-go to Greektown
-check out the downtown architecture
-take in the 2-mile 50 cent tour on the Peoplemover
-ride the Detroit Princess riverboat
-check out the Mies van der Rohe architecture in Lafayette park
-check out the fine art at the newly refurbished Detroit Institute of Arts
-go to the African American history museum
-go to the Henry Ford museum (again, not within city limits)
-take a nap in your hotel room

Go to Greektown. You will be safe, eat great food and can do the casino if you like, all on foot. There is a very nice hotel there...the Athenium.
