Even as a business professional, I would much rather have a 313 then 586 or whatever else there is. I mean, what is 586? People from out of state see 313 Detroit and that to them is cool. New york 212, Chicago 312, etc....
It isn't about being gangster, it is about living in a place that means something to you, and other people. If it doesn't mean anything to you, then I doubt you'd understand what I mean and should move on to other 586'ers living in wherever. |

My uncle lives in Southern Florida and still has his 313 number. He gets calls or texts about once a month asking him "where he be at" and the people do not understand they called a wrong number - the same number keeps calling him and asking him "why did you steal my boys phone? you a bad person". I changed my number 6 years ago from 313 and haven't looked back. Just wanted to warn you, OP, you will get your "street cred", but you will also get messages involving lots of creative uses of the "n" word. |

For the record, I've had a 313 cell phone for years, and I've never had a problem with wrong numbers. It happens now and then, just like with any other phone, but I can't remember ever getting drug-related messages or calls.
Also, just because someone uses black vernacular English doesn't mean they're "shady" or looking for drugs. It's called a dialect. Unless you have some paralyzing fear of black Detroiters, you should be able to handle it when they dial your number by mistake. |

2 things...
It took 6 months to shake the people associated with the number on my last cell phone. The guy who had it before me had serious issues with everybody!! I had drug dealers, debt collectors, and finally the law call looking for some guy named Steve. And this was with a suburban area code!! I now still do get wrong numbers on my cell(with a Manhattan area code) from all types of people and all dialects. |
