LOL....that's funny. And yes I believe you can as long as you can provide an address(home, work, other place of business that you are associated with) that is in the 313 area code.

I know all of Detroit and Dearborn are 313, but that's it.....I think....

I'm so proud of my 313 area code that I have a t-shirt that proclaims it! Okay, that's a joke but when I went skiing up north a couple weekends back we started talking to some people who refused to believe we lived in the city, and when I showed them my driver's license they were in awe. I had to admit that was a very gratifying street cred moment.
If you get Vonage or another one of those internet protocal phone services, you can choose a 313 area code and live in Manhattan if you want (choosing 212 and living in Detroit might be harder since they are running out of 212 numbers I think). In any case, doesn't 313 still cover large areas of Wayne County, including the Grosse Pointes, and maybe the near western suburbs like Redford?

Yes cell phones too.

Honestly I hate it. I get soooo many ghetto wrong numbers, drug dealers, etc, all kinds of crazy stuff.

This whole area that's 734 now (Westland, Garden City, also some downriver like Wyandotte) used to be 313 until 1997. And even before that it covered the now 810 area until '93 (and 248 was broken from 810 in '97 also.) I think theres 2 or three more they've thrown in now.

For a cell phone you should be able to tell them the area code you want.

Some cell phone store employees do not KNOW this, so ask for a manager. I can get an Alaska number in Michigan if I want to. Lots of people do this so they can have a contact number with an area code close to a job they are interviewing for.
