All right, I'll give it a go - Grosse Ile, because paying $10 to cross a ferry every time I want to go somewhere sounds pretty unacceptable to me. I would have to carefully plan everything I did, time my errands around when it was working, and it would encourage me to work from home more which in turn would turn me into even more of a hermit than I already am. Sure I could get a boat, but I'm not really a boat guy. I'd love a vacation home somewhere like Harsen's Island, but as for a primary residence Grosse Ile is nice enough and my understanding is that it has at least one bridge I don't have to pay a toll for.

Most of our options have been similarish cities in different geographic areas, let's try a contrast with different cities in a similar geographic area

I honestly do not know much about Harsens island other than it is a place for retirees or vacation homes. There is no reliable access. I am told it is pretty.

We chose Grosse Ile after exploring and researching about a hundred communities within reach of DTW for two years. We went as far out as China Township, Monroe, Jackson, and Marshall. I had some knowledge of the area having grown up in Lyon Township and then attended Wayne State and then U-M. However I had never heard of Grosse Ile before we started looking for a place to live upon our return after 18 years in California.

While I can (and have) gone on for pages about the wonders of Grosse Ile, our selection process came down to a few handfuls of finalists. (Ann Arbor, Chelsea, Dexter, Plymouth, Northville, South Lyon/Lyon Township, Grosse Pointe, Detroit, Rochester, Grosse Ile, Franklin, Walled Lake, might be missing a couple). From there we narrowed it down primarily based on finding a really exciting house that we could buy. We made an offer on a cool house on Penniman street in Plymouth, but it was declined. We were high bidder on an uber cool foreclosed mansion in Northville, then we got massively sniped. We considered for quite a while making an offer on an amazing mansion (Fisher Family) in Detroit, but decided not to do the urban pioneer thing a second time. Ultimately, Grosse Ile offered a neat historic house for $1 and an opportunity to do something unique and cool (move the house and restore it). It was at least equal to all the other frontrunners and excelled in some areas, but we could have chosen any of them. It was all about the house.

I learned more about GI later that made it even more of an ideal choice, but at the time it was: cool house for $1; waterfront living; and how cool is it to live on an island.

In the scope of this game, I would have a very difficult time choosing between any of the ones on the short list (except maybe Franklin and Walled Lake - now, I would probably drop them off the short list, not that they are awful, just too ordinary)

At times I regret not getting the house in Northville and also a restored 1700s house we considered that was 1/4/ mile from my parents. But most of the time, I think we made an ideal choice (except financially - financially the house was a disaster for us so far.)

Pick any two others form the short list above and my answer woudl be depends ont eh house. They each offer something special and unique.

Milford no question for the location. I spent my very early years in a very small town with corn fields 3 blocks away. (Yellow Springs, Ohio) so I like being close to country side. Even in Ann Arbor I can hop on Platt Road, head south and see corn fields in 6-7 minutes.



Howell or Chelsea

Chelsea. Fair or not, Howell has a really bad reputation for racial intolerance. Chelsea has a cute downtown and is incredibly charming.
