Basically, draw a line at about Rochester, NY south..cut just east of Pittsburgh and then cut west along the Ohio River to Illinois, north through Wisconsin, back east between the UP of Michigan and the Canadian border and then back south all along the Lake Huron and Lake Erie shoreline and that is the good ole great lakes, rustbelt region of the midwest!! IMHO, of course....

We were chatting about this over in the general forum and I was surprised how many Pittsburghers would disagree with you. I think Detroiters always consider Pittsburgh one of their own, Pittsburghers seem to lean more eastern.
There's an effort underway to re-brand the "rust belt" cities. One proposal is "blue belt" to establish the tie to the Great Lakes. It really is its own region - far more culturally and economically aligned with the Northeast industrial / northern forest mindset (thanks to the St. Lawrence Seaway and Erie Canal I'm sure) than the plains Midwest, but still decidedly Midwestern.
Plus - the Great Lakes are probably the most unique and under appreciated natural resource in the U.S. So fricking gorgeous.
