I realize this is an old thread but I just got back from a visit to Detroit and I had the BEST TIME so I wanted to share. We stayed right downtown at the Marriott inside the Renaissance Center, which is right on the People Mover line so you can easily get anywhere you might want to go downtown without driving/parking again. Greektown was totally hopping, long lines at every restaurant and the casino was packed pretty full. We had tickets to see the Red Wings which is always a hot ticket! And wandered out to Hockeytown Cafe afterwards for delicious pizza.

We went by so many places that we would love to see again when we have more time: the casinos, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Science Center, Campus Martius, etc. We didn't even get to eat at any of the superb restaurants in Greektown cuz we didn't allow enough time! We almost stayed an extra day to go watch the Lions lose, Ford Field would have been fun. And that's just downtown . . .

If you're into history, it doesn't get much more historic than Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum. Not super close to downtown, but very much worth a visit.

"The Henry Ford" isn't in Detroit. It's in Dearborn. Although it's not far from Detroit, let's give credit where credit is due...

As far as "does anyone visit", I ran into a van load of Japanese firemen who came all the way from Japan to drive around Detroit on the night of October 30. Guess what they were here for....all the way from Japan? Hint: They could write off thier trip expenses on their income tax....

Good to hear, Jeanniepep. People really can have a good time in Detroit; downtown's really making a comeback.

True, true. But, if you are from anywhere outside of Michigan, the whole metro area is considered "Detroit." I've been to places where they think the whole lower peninsula is Detroit!

Downtown Detroit definitely has plenty to offer and lots to do. But, if you're here for a longer visit, there is also fun to be had in Dearborn, Ferndale, Royal Oak, Ann Arbor, etc.
