You definitely would do well in Rochester Hills. My family moved there from Toronto about 10 years ago We've since moved on, but it was a great area... far enough north from Detroit, but still has every amenity you could want.

I'd consider looking into Lake Orion, if you are thinking Rochester. Lake Orion/Orion Township has some amazing schools, nice family oriented areas and sidewalks (LOL).
