Another Detroit memory: Gonella's-(Oakwood Blvd.) they had the best subs i've ever tasted;this was before arab owners took it over. It was never the same after. It was funny to order a sub according to dollar amount-(example) "Yes, i'd like a three dollar sub and two four dollar subs". (i believe i've already posted something about Gonella's once...oops)
The Hoedown downtown in Hart Plaza is another fond Detroit memory!

Another Detroit memory: going into the basement on a Saturday afternoon around 11 or 12 when the the salt mine would detonate explosives. You could feel the vibration of the explosion really well in your basement. The funny thing is that they would do it every Saturday at the exact time so you'd know to go into the basement and wait for the explosion. It was neat!

Gonella's is now in Dearborn on Outer Drive. I think it's the same owners....Other great subs, maybe better than Gonella's...Alchemo's on Schaefer south of Michigan. What about down the street from Gonella's on Oakwood, Giovanni's....Haven't been back since the fire....

Yeah, me too! Detroit, from history and 'testimony', would of been like what Windsor (Canada..) is like now just on the basis of having so many different ethnicities living in a city.

I was just down there about a month ago visiting a great-uncle who still lives there off of Oakwood kitty-corner from Giovanni's. I took a look at the restaraunt and it still looks 'high-end' compared to the rest of the neighborhood. Believe it or not, i have never ate there in all the time that i've lived there. It was either we were poor or that restaraunt was just too fancy. Probably a combination of the both.

I remember running into a Channel 4 newscaster at the Ambassador Duty-Free store one day loading up on some liquor.
Funny thing is, i'd joke from time to time saying that he looked hammered.
Can't remember his name though.

No, he is/was an old grumpy-lookin' short black guy that would usually report from the 'field', but anchored the news-set once in awhile.
Sort of remembering his first name being a Bob or something. Channel Four...

Are you talking about the post on Mack (detroit grosse pointe border)? The building is still there, I dont know if it is open for business. There is also a Post in Downtown Det. as well.
