Hi all,
I am new here and have many Detroit memories & how things have changed !
I loved Hudsons at christmas and Boblo ! (any one remember the roto ride where it spun and the floor dropped, you stuck to the floor)?
I currently live east side suburb and spend a quite a bit of my summer at the Detroit Yacht Club on Belle Isle.
As a kid, I loved watching the RenCen being built - I knew Detroit was something special!
Anyone remember Crowley's Department store ?
Lots of new development on Mack and Jefferson in the last couple of years. Business and residential (strip malls, beautiful new homes & condos) Time will tell if people will spend the money to shop / live there. Would love to see Detroit as special again !

Sure, I remember Crowley's. How about Winkelman's? When we were kids, we used to take the bus downtown and go to Hudson's. In the summer they had the DDD sale(Downtown Detroit Days). That place was a madhouse! Remember the Thanksgiving Day Parade? It was a big deal.

I remember my sister taking me downtown to Hudson's at Christmas. I miss the old tiger park, going to Boblo. I remember Winkleman's and shopping at 7 mile with friends then going to Woolworth for a hotdog.

Default Yes I Do Have Good Memories-before 1961

Iwas Born In Detroit And Grew Up There. Oh How I Miss The Good Old Days There.i Remember Taking A Street Car Up Van Dyke To Get To The Eastown Show On Harpper. We Had 4 Shows We Could Walk To.. It Was Perfectly Safe For Children (anyone) To Go To Belle Isle For A Picnic. They Had A Zoo, Pony Rides, Canoe Rentals And That Beautiful Fountain. It Was Where We Went To Take Pictures On Special Occasions, like Weddings And Graduation. I Could Walk To The Shopping Center On Harpper That Had Every Thing You Wanted. There Was A Federal Dept. Store--kresges , Wooworth And Niesners Dime Store. Shoe Stores-ladies Dresses- Jewelry Stores-- Cunningham Drugstore And A Coney Island. Oh Yes A Bridal Store Where I Bought My Wedding Dress. All This And Many More Stores Were Within 4 Blocks. On The Fourth Of July We Had A Biggg Fire Works Diplay At The Park. Going To Bob-lo Was A Big Treat. It Was Like A Polish Wedding On The Boat With All The Dancing. We Had 4 Catholic Churches In The Area And Schools We Could Walk To For Lunch. I Worked For The C.f.smith Store On My Corner. It Was Like A Little Supermarket So We Could Walk To And Not Need A Car. I Coul Go On For Hours About My Memories But This Will Do. The Ma

Well, I'm way younger than street cars, but way older than Brittney. I old enough to remember the first "Simpsons", but not old enough to remember the first "Dragnet" on TV. Old enough to be working full time and living on my own when "Hill Street Blues" was on, but still at home with the parents when "Barney Miller" was making new episodes.

OMG! What a great thread this is! I don't usually post or even visit this board often as I moved from the area I was born and raised in (Detroit and burbs) over a dozen years ago. But I stumbled on this and started reading and couldn't stop ( kept me from getting a lot of stuff done this afternoon.) Ah, well, time well spent...Here's a few Motown Memories to add to the lot...Anyone remember the Grande Ballroom - saw Blood, Sweat & Tears there.) How about Edgewater Park? And what about the Caterpiller Ride at Bob-Lo? and Captain Bob-Lo greeting you as you boarded the boat selling "Color Books...Get yer Color Books!" What about the Great Lakes Theater on Grand River East of Greenfield? Or Sam's Drugs on Fenkell - took up a whole city block with the whole Yagoda family selling everything from kids' kites to liquer and prescription drugs, with free delivery to boot. And talk about beautiful architecture - how about the Fisher Building - just incredible! I do remember not only the Crowley store downtown, but also the wooden escalator in it. My girlfriend and I bought our first pair of colored cordorouy pants there. They were lavender colored and we had never seen anything like it before. Boy did we think we were hot stuff! I probably wore them when I rode the Grand River bus by myself as a kid down to Olympia Stadium to see a hot new group called The Beatles! It was safe cause the bus was only loaded with other teenage girls with their transister radios listening to "She Loves You Yah, Yah, Yah..." And how about GreekTown when every Greek Easter they would have a festival down there with artists, red eggs, etc. Long before the international festivals on the waterfront. Oh, and what about George Pierot, the travel commentator who use to doze off while his guests showed their home travel movies? And what about Bill Kennedy and Rita Bell's prize movie? I use to like to watch her tap her pencil as she waited for an answer from the callers during the movie breaks. And what about John Kelly and Marilyn Turner, and Dick Purtan and Colleen Burcar - Are they still around? How about the Greyhound Bus Terminal and the Cunningham's Drug Store that was located in it. And there was a bar in there where my mom once met and got me the autograph of Bobby Vinton! And there was a little hole-in-the-wall bar called the Chez Montez downtown - still there? Is John R & Brush still the "red-light" district? Thanks to whoever started this thread. Its been a great stroll down memory lane!
