Too young for the Grande Ballroom, but Russ Gibb is still around:
Russ Gibb at Random
His claim to fame was starting the "Paul McCartney is dead" rumor......and producing shows at the Grande.

I think the only newsperson that you mentioned who is still around is Dick Purtan, now on WOMC. You can hear him on cable radio.

I remember Edgewater...puked there once on one of the spinny rides as a kid. Also remember the "little guy" on the Boblo boat. Also remember the moonlight cruises on the boats.

Now it's been said that you have given certain members of this board web sites specific to white supremacy, KKK, and Ayran Nation, and other hate groups. You can hate anyone you want including myself, even though you have never met me I'm black.

I can't help that you would refuse to admit any complicity in the state of affairs in the se mi area and that more than likely you have close family and friends who lived here in previous generations who helped create and maintain the hatred and segregation that has come to be se mi's greatest infamous legacy.

If a white person says they are moving to or have questions about detroit, you are the first one to start immediately bashing, stereotyping, and blaming blacks for every historical fault with the city, are you afraid that a white person who dosen't have your hatred and ignorance would come here and live w/o incident and thus start to erode just a little of the hysteria you throw around?

If you are a white supremist then just admit it and give everyone who reads your posts a chance to see where your real motivations and views stem from.

Again, if you choose to hate me because I'm black, I can live with that; because unfortunately some people choose to hate no matter what.

The truly sad part is that I have to tell my children who are all under 6yoa that sometimes people aren't going to like them because their skin is dark, I've also taught them that no one else is inheritly more intelligent, moral, or valuable than the are, and to accept and judge all people based on how they treat you and if they mistreat you be a better person and don't return hate with hate. I have to tell them these things because there are still people like you who would think and have everyone else around you think the worse of them simply because of their complections.

Mixed and bi-racial couples have to ask is it safe for their children in certain cities and areas not because of crime but because people like you live in the community, and would spew your toxic verbaige to anyone misguided enough to lend you an ear.

My question to you is this, is your racism going to die with you when you pass from this life, or are you already teaching some other generation to hate as you do? Whose mind have you corrupted and whose love and spirit for humanity have you killed.
Reconmark , Why soooo touchy. "them" to me meant the poor white rednecks who lived in SW Detroit and moved as they burned entire city blocks down by Pitt , Belle and WOODMERE.
Remember Patton Park?
I grew up in NW Detroit where all the streets were named for Indian tribes, way cool. During the '67 riots we had an early curfew, would see the National Guard on the streets. We kids thought it was fun..., our parents were worried sick.
Used to go to Northland to catch frogs before it was a state-of-the-art Mall. Crystal pool was near there also.
Delray bakery had the best ever Polish cheesecake, it was flakey/cakey, not a solid mass like we see today. and soooo delicious.
How about the Stroh's beer brewery. Some of our Dad's drank a lot of that stuff., eyeroll. And VERNORS gingerale, the BEST!

Nope. I believe the building is for sale. Either that building or the Vernor Springwells building. In any event, both the 3rd and 4th precincts are closed. A few years ago, the 13 precincts were merged into half that many. The "Southwest" district is in a new building that's a much nicer working envirnomnent with none of the "character" and probably only a little bit of the asbestos and mold of the old buildings.

Default Detroit Memories

I wasen't being touchy at all, that reply was from another post and had nothing to do with the "Detroit Memories" thread.
I don't know if you are new to this board, but if you look at who the post was addressed to, then you would know that my reply was well deserved.

Another Detroit memory!

Remebering laying in my bed at night and being able to hear the freight/tug boats blow their horn coming in from the Detroit River to the Rouge River on a summer night. I kinda miss hearing that. It's akin to hearing the train going by in the country. O', how sweet the sound; the sound of 'commerce'!

Telway may even have been a WT(White Tower) knockoff, built in 30's or so.But Telway's better than either though! My 1st job was at Earl's Telway on Telegraph. R/e the Ralley's- Funny, in 70's they built a BK across the street from Telway. Telway owner said " we were here long before them, and will be here long after" Quite true, as it turned out, the BK closed about 15 yrs ago, was finally torn down. When Ralley's opened, Telway put a scrolling billboard facing the Ralley's parking lot. Telway outlasted the Ralley's also!
Telway's a Detroit relic, and doing well. No drive thru window here or even considered, too impersonal. Only 6 stools inside for seating. BUT there's always customers at the carry out window for those famous burgers and coffee.

Belle Isle definitely is one of my favorite memories. I use to work at a scrap company in Detroit and had to get up at a quarter to 6 in the morning. I loved driving around the city in the morning and looking at all the factories
