We use to go on the horse and buggy ride on Belle Isle with my Grandma and my Uncle. My sister and I took turns riding up front and "driving" the buggy; but it always seemed to be my sister's turn - hmmmmmm - childhood memories....Detroit will always have a place in my heart. No matter where I may now call "home."

Telway owner said " we were here long before them, and will be here long after" Quite true, as it turned out, the BK closed about 15 yrs ago, was finally torn down. When Ralley's opened, Telway put a scrolling billboard facing the Ralley's parking lot. Telway outlasted the Ralley's also!
Telway's a Detroit relic, and doing well. No drive thru window here or even considered, too impersonal. Only 6 stools inside for seating. BUT there's always customers at the carry out window for those famous burgers and coffee.
I remember Telway as the first really cool drive in...we would cruise telegraph road...and then drive thru hoping for a parking spot...I think we were a bit younger than most there...but so fun....

Default Things that went extinct

Here are things that were on their way out during my 1960s childhood, now long gone, or at best, barely alive and left for dead:
1) Nearly all of the good old restaurants that were doing well during the 1950s and early 60s
2) The train station (maybe a ruin is still left, if not knocked down yet)
3) A semblance of racial diversity (non diversity now rules, city one way, suburbs the other)
4) Real manufacturing
5) Planes with radial engines thumping away on the climb out from City Airport
6) Boblo
7) Hudson's
8) Ice skating in Palmer Park and not worrying about getting shot
9) Walking with my cousins after dark, with only minimal parental oversight, near 7 mile, on the East side and there being no real danger.
10) The GT commuter trains

When leaving Hudson's on the woodward side, you could always smell the Kresge's across the street cooking their waffles in the basement cafeteria, they used these waffles to make ice cream sandwichs, the waffles would make still warm enough to make the ice cream soft, the Kresge's was on the southern corner across woodward and on the northern corner around the block you had Quickie doughnuts wich were also very good. I have a huge sweet tooth.
Yep! I can still taste / smell 'em.

In case it hasn't already been mentioned, let's see if anyone around my age (53) remembers the magic words. Twin Pines

I put the correct response in white text at the end of the above sentence. Just pull your cursor across the area. Who got it right?

I attended Wayne State in the early 1980s. There were not a lot of good things to say about Detroit at that time. Almost everyone commuted and most of our social time was spent outside of Detroit. It seems a lot better now.

I do remember the Boblo boats well and fondly. There was a preacher I think his name was reverend Jim who came on campus and preached hate ("Every woman here is a ***** and every man is a pusher and a pimp") and one year, the students carried him all the way to the river and threw him in (I think it was about two miles!). I remember riot police charging through the campus several times carrying clear plastic shields. I never found out why, but it was scary. The Hudsons thanksgiving parade was a lot of fun, but you wanted to go with a large group. I used to run all the way from Wayne State to Greektown because it was not safe to walk. There were some very bad areas between Wayne campus and Greektown. You had to drive or run. Since it was hard to find parking and I wanted the workout, I usually ran. Sometimes, people would yell things and chase me, but I think that they were just playing games and trying to scare me. They never caught me so I never found out. The fireworks were always awesome, but we went to the Canadian side to avoid getting hurt. It was great later, when they brought the Grand Prix to Detroit. What a great atmosphere for that race. There was a fun bar on the water called Riverwalk or something like that. They had a lot of seating on the roof. I also remember running to a soda pop factory (possibly Faygo?) that had windows where you could look in and watch them filling bottles, it was fascinating to watch.

Mostly I remember having batteries and radios stolen from our cars on a regular basis, students getting mugged or raped from time to time and not much going on downtown at all. If you tried to eat outside, your would get mobbed by hungry pigeons who would steal food right out of your hand. I liked going to Wayne because it has a great campus and had great students and faculty, but I did not see much redeeming value in Downtown Detroit.

Now it seems like there are a lot of pockets of really nice areas downtown. The Wayne campus and the library/museum area appear to have improved a great deal. I drove up Woodward from Jefferson to Wayne State and it looked like it would be a nice walk now rather than a scary run (good thing - I cannot run that far anymore).

I hope to spend some time there with my family and make new memories.
