That's the Telway I worked at, about 69-72.
Alas, Telway never owned the land.(was owned by Standard Oil)
Mich National Bank somehow bought the land from the oil co,
told Telway their lease was not to be renewed, so that Telway
closed about 77/78. I helped move out some equipment, etc.The
building was renovated to a bank, then later a party store.
I can't say how it would do if still open, but Telway's was still doing
a good business at that time. They did lose some business when I-96 opened also when right turn on red allowed. Attempts to find nearby locations to
move to failed. However the other 2 Telways, Michigan Ave/Martin and
11 Mile/John R are still doing great. Neither of those were drive ins with car hops though.
'Cosmic Justice'- The bank's land deal was shady, CEO left the company, and most of the 'corner gas station' converted branches closed anyways. The building was a party store several years, then Walgreen's bought all the adjacent houses and bar next door. Telway's building was demolished,Is now a Walgreen's there. (Right, as if there aren't enough of those around)
Late 60's, cruising Telway, Linda Barber? Hmm, we've probably met. Wow, I started there cleaning up the lot early A.M.'s,then was hired to cook for the afternoon/ midnights.

Now there was a landmark- Carriage House.(Up until just a few years ago- 3-4 years?)
They didn't even have a sign for years, we all knew where it was. There's alot of stories around about their closing, they had a great business going at the time, closed up overnight, no warning....Classic you gotta know where they are- a radio station once ran a promo there, but only the regular customers could find the place, no signs!

I think it was more than 4 years ago.....Now it's an Irish restaurant/bar...I think it's a chain...Maggy O'Grady's or something like that? The best times for that bar was before he bought the places next door and started knocking down walls to triple the size of it. That was the beginning of the end for Ye Olde Carriage House I think....Drank a lot of $.75 beers in that place....

Default My memories

Going to my first concert at Cobo Hall--Journey. Sometime around 1982, then there was Def Leopard at Joe Lewis Arena. Oh, I went with my first real boyfriend, Roger. Oh....the memories there.

Then, I worked for Pepsi and I would get tickets to events like the race through the city (like a mini-Indy) Then I saw Eddie Murphy at Pine Knob with a guy from Pepsi. What a dope he was.

Omg, and cruising Gratiot. Do the kids do that anymore??? Me and my best friend, Sue Thomas, would hang out as her dad lived in walking distance to Gratiot. We had memories from one summer to last a lifetime.

I know there's more, but I gotta run.

Default Remember the swim-mobile's??

I think it was just an open tank truck and was filled with water, but loved the heck out of it--just wonder now, what it was filled with when it didn't have water in it.

Thanks for the Faygo pop link. Loved watching the old commercial
