The brick/cobblestone roads near and around the old Tiger Stadium.

When Greektown had a putt-putt course inside Trappers Alley.

Remember coming from Hamtramik, getting off the freeway due to a traffic jam and passing the mural of Malice Green.

Remember the time i either came into downtown from the Lodge or Windsor Tunnel only to see the Joe Louis fist spray-painted with the word "OZZY" across the knuckles in neon orange.

I remember when Xochimilcos in Mexican Town used to be the place to go!

I remember walking back home one night only to get mauled by a pit-bull. (luckily, it just locked onto my hand..)

I remember going to church with my friend's ma and dad by the old Tiger Stadium; it's funny cause i wasn't familiar with the Catholic traditions of church in any sense. I was just imitating everyone else!

...remember coming home only to see a strange car by my house (undercover car..) and asking the guys 'what's going on?"..only to find out my dad had died that night from an apparrent overdose.

That must have been Most Holy Trinity. Second oldest church in Detroit I believe.

One didn't have to be very tough to survive the 1950's Detroit. I was a 1954Mackenzie grad.
We did have our moments, though.
I remember going to a Denby/Mackenzie basketball game where our star "Moose" was stabbed, in the Denby parking lot, after the game.
They used penknives in those day so he wasn't seriously hurt.
It was the one and only away game I ever went to.
Mackenzie is history now, as is Redford, which I attended for one semester.
My old grade school, Parker, is closed as well.
R.I.P Detroit.
Both Mackenzie and Redford are both still open. Ah the good old days when nothing violent or out place happened.

And the-
Would you clarify this, please?
I heard, from a reliable source, that all of the afore mentioned schools are closed.

I think they're both closed too. I was talking to someone the other day who said they were in the last graduating class of Mackenzie (can't remember who or what class they were in, but I think it was closed last year), and a friend of mine went to Redford and mentioned that was closed too. The DPS site seems to confirm that. Maybe they're charter schools now, but I doubt it.

I know for a fact Redford HS closed June 2007. I also went to RHS, some of my friends are active with alumni groups. We were supposed to have a final tour and a picnic on the grounds last summer but the outgoing principal backed out at the last minute. When back in Detroit in Nov I drove by Redford area. Funny, the school looks cleaner WITHOUT students there, it must still be maintained(and guarded)Mackenzie and Chadsey were also slated to close. I don't know if Mackenzie closed after all. But Chadsey (I also went there 11th) has been 'merged' with adjacent Munger Jr high, is no longer a high school. It was obvious even in the 70's SOME schools would have to close in Detroit and all over the country. The 'baby boom' required a record # of schools to be built and once the 'boom' was over, not so many schools were needed. Happened in almost every suburb of Detroit also. But Detroit's school boards failed to plan for a reduced enrollment, lack of funds and services now is chasing more away and to charter schools/ suburban schools choice.

Default East Side Memories (between6-7mile and Gratiot)

I grew up in the 70's in detroit and saw many great things go by the wayside.
But here are some good memories:
Being able to go pretty much anywhere till the street lights came on. And be safe.
The woods theater on mack near St. Johns hospital.$.50 for 2 movies and a cartoon, and they let you watch them again.
Riding our bikes to jefferson to go swimming.
Frozen Custard.
SwimMobile and block parties.
On Tv(ok not so great)
crusin gratiot
Paper drives for the boyscouts
The zoo and greenfield village trips
And more.

I still own my childhood home, the lady who rents it has lived there longer then we did. Checked google maps and see there are only 6 houses left on my block.
so sad.
Well thats some childhood memories for ya.

Mike

The white/albino deers on Belle Isle.

Remembering the old paper route going through predominantly black neighborhoods being called 'white bread' by the girls my age...they must of liked me!

Remembering when someone (not the police..) threw some police road-tacks (something like thumb tacks but heavy duty..) on I-75 over the Rouge Bridge; lots of people got stranded with multiple flat tires on the bridge.
