Here's an article in today's Detroit Free Press re-visiting Kronk Boxing , this story is way to massive so I'll just post a link . These newspaper stories usually last a few weeks before going into a paid archive . I'm disappointed there was no mention(unless I missed it) of a white boxer that Emmanuel Stewart trained and had many fights early in Kronk Boxing cards at the Olympia , Mickey Goodwin from Melvindale . If anyone ever saw a Mickey Goodwin fight you'd know 2 things , the fight didn't last long , and you'd wonder how someone could throw a punch that hard . The only thing I can think of why there is no mention is that Mickey had a falling out with Stewart and got another trainer and moved to New York .

I haven't read the entire thread so not if someone has already shared this. I thought it was a fun site to jump start some memories that I had forgotten about.

Mickey Goodwin, the Downriver boxer who became Kronk’s first star, was found bludgeoned to death in his home Tuesday, according to Melvindale Police.

Update to the story above:
Mickey Goodwin, the Downriver boxer who became Kronk’s first star, died of a stroke in home, Melvindale police said this afternoon.
Goodwin’s body was discovered about 5 p.m. at the house on Ruth Street in Melvindale he shared with his mother, said Lt. Keith Guyot.
Goodwin’s mother was not home at the time.
Melvindale Police Detective Mike Welch said that Goodwin was not beaten as suspected earlier. Welch said the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s office had ruled that the death was not a homicide.
“It looks like he might have had a stroke and fallen down the stairs,” Welch said of the 51-year-old boxer.
Officers went to check on Goodwin after being told that he had not shown up for work at the River Rouge gym where he trained boxers.

We used to live on the North East Side of Detroit as a kid in the seventies, on Cliff Street and owned a grocery store on Seven Mile. At that time all the neighbor children played and we went to Fanny Richards Elementary which is now Marion Law Elementary. The houses were brick and the lawns were well manacured but people slowly put their houses up for sale. Today I know west of Cliff Street the neighborhood has declined, east of cliff street no as much and north of outer drive there not as noticeable. I remember going to Hudsons and visiting grandma. It was all so nice. There wasn't that much of a crime issue and for some time our school was kind of nice. The teachers were very nice too and the school was mixed with black and white. Some kids didn't get along.

I've been in AZ since '76 but I grew up in Detroit. I spent most of my childhood near 7 mile east of what is now I-75 (used to be John R). It was a beautiful neighborhood in the 50's. I've been back to take photos since and wow, it has really gone downhill. The house I grew up in is now an empty lot (kind of sad) and a lot of the stores I used to go to are abandoned and boarded up. In my teens my family moved to the 6 mile John R area. I think one of the Vernors bottling plants was near there. I've been back to this area for photos too and most of the homes are now gone. It looks like it's going to be back to a forest some day unless they start building there again. I used to deliver newspapers there so it's a shock to see the homes gone. What happened to Detroit? I remember many of the things people have written about here and have a lot of good memories about those early Detroit days but it sure has changed. My mom still lives in Oak Park so I come back to MI now and then but I don't normally drive into Detroit anymore.
