I also spent a great deal of time in my early years at my cousin near 6 Mile/Oakland area.

I remember when they would open up a fire hydrant for us kids to cool off on hot summer days. I wonder now if it was done by the city or someones dad. I don't remember ever seeing the swimmobile. We used to walk up to Butzel pool all the time for a swim. Mom and dad took us a lot to Rouge Park. We would bring sandwiches or something and spend the whole day there. The pool, the nature center trails were great for us little ones. And there was a model airplane club that met in Rouge. I loved watching them. Then we would go and try to find some golf balls. Go see the horses. Rouge Park was first rate. Palmer Park too.

Hey Maxine3, are you listening? I think I read that your daughter was in first grade at Parker in 1963. I was in kindergarden, my sis was in first in 1963. We also had Mrs Bay. I used to go to over a classmates house after school who lived on Hartwell, a couple houses south of Plmouth. Dang, I cannot recall his name. We went to sunday school across the street from there. I think it was Ward Church.
Maxine3 here. All true. I went to Ward church also. That would have been about 1947. Small world

Omg, and cruising Gratiot. Do the kids do that anymore??? Me and my best friend, Sue Thomas, would hang out as her dad lived in walking distance to Gratiot. We had memories from one summer to last a lifetime.

I know there's more, but I gotta run.

I am 19 years old and can tell you the kids certainly don't cruise Gratiot anymore.
The Roseville Police are buggers and will bust any car going even one mile above the limit.

In those days, drinking and driving wasn't frowned upon as much as it is now.
My dad, (who grew up in Detroit in the late 60s-early 70s) told me stories of cops pulling him over and simply forcing him and his friends to pour their beer out and go home--something that would never happen now.

I wish I was alive in those days... so many more freedoms.

Memories, memories! I grew up in NW Detroit, Schoolcraft and Evergreen area. Went to Shirley for elementary, Harding for elementary and Junior High, and Redford High School. I now live in Texas and really miss Meijers, Elias Brothers (Big Boy restaurant), Dunkin Donuts, and Tim Hortons coffee, to name a few. I remember waaaaay back when Ollie Fretter and Mr. Belvedere hawked their appliances and screened in porches on TV, being the Fan Club president for Joe Niekro of the Tigers, missing work at McDonalds to attend Ladies Day($1.00) at Tiger Stadium (Michigan and Trumble, what an exciting address!),on Saturdays when the team was in town, Jim Northrup, Mickey Stanley, Al Kaline, Bill Freehan, and my favorite Aurelio Rodriguez ("Rodrelio"). Snow days, always welcomed! Summer nights in the city so hot, and no AC in those days, that the windows would be open to catch any type of breeze while sleeping in a bathing suit. The "Pigs Trough" at Farrells Ice Cream parlor on Telegraph. Taking the bus, and a transfer, to go shopping at the hot part of town to shop, Grand River and Greenfield. Montgomery Ward, JC Penney, and Federal's Dept. store, the teenage girl's "Big 3".Thanks everyone, I have enjoyed this walk down memory lane.

Can't we all just get along?

I really don't have any childhood memories of Detroit. We seldom went there and my parents never lived there. My wife grew up off of Morang and only left less than ten years ago. It sounded like an okay place until the city workers left almost all at once in 99-00.

I'll try, us66.

Similar to your story, my brother Tim lived on Lappin Street between E State Fair and Seven Mile. Almost everyone that lived on his block was a police officer, firefighter, or something similar. He left in 2002, about the same time your wife did, moved to Hoover and 12. That's the problem with the city, all the good people are leaving (regardless of race, it seems almost everyone with a good-paying job is leaving the city), and that only leaves the bad people. And, THAT is the problem with Detroit. However, I decided to make an offer on a house in the Marina District the other day. I'll keep everyone updated on that.

I looked at houses a bit in her old neighborhood in 03-04. Much of the area still looked okay, but $110K in Detroit seemed a bit high. Her block looks pretty bad. The neighbor's garage partly collapsed and a house burned another house or two down. A brick house on the block sold for $6500 last year. I would have bought it if I had the cash...it was inhabitable. Go a couple of blocks away and it still looks okay, but it's clearly not getting better.
