Default July 4th weekend events

There's the Comerica cityfest in new center area, with food, live music. Looks kinda fun. We're trying to decide about going to that, or visiting Chicago, since I've never been there, it would be nice to try something new. My only concern is that weekend in Chicago might be way too packed with people to even enjoy it. Any advice?

The Cityfest is the old Tastefest right? Free concerts are nice. I saw Common there last year...or was it the year before?
