Why should I have to use "common sense" to be safe downtown? In a "safe" area, you should be able to walk around with your head in the clouds and not be robbed shouldn't you? Sounds like "common sense" means "being aware of your surroundings and not doing anything to make yourself an easy target."
Isn't that what the people you were talking about were doing? Or could you read their minds and smell their terror?
And, I guess when can also infer from this:
....that downtown Detroit is DANGEROUS if you don't use simple common sense. Well, my wife does things contrary to what makes sense every day. I guess I shouldn't let her go downtown......

using common sense is necessary ANYWHERE in the US and certainly in any US city. That is a pretty rude comment about your wife but if she truly isn't capable of using common sense I suppose you could lock her in the house for her own protection. So now all crime in the country is because of Detroit? Give me a break.

That is tragic, but there is no information on that crime yet.

"Using common sense" in the context we're talking about is just a euphamism for being cautious so as not to become a crime victim. You need a lot more "common sense" in downtown Detroit than you do in downtown Plymouth.....The statisics bear that out easily in all categories. Violent crime, property crime, crimes against persons.....

Detroit is by far the worst city in the United States. I have been to many cities and never have I felt scared like I did in Detroit. The city is dying/dead. It is not like any other city, it is horrible.

I agree with that. I'm comparing DOWNTOWN Detroit(not the whole city) to other major CITIES, not upper middle/middle class suburbs. I like cities, hanging out in Plymouth is boring to me, no offense it's lovely just not for me. If you refuse to be cautious you do not belong in any major city in the US and I have lived in many of them.

There is some truth that a lot of the drugs in other parts of the country come from dealers in Detroit. A large drug "hub" is in the Huntington,WV and Ashland,KY area where two dope dealers from the Detroit area were arrested a few months ago. Also, southwestern PA near the WV line has terrible drug problems as well. These dealers must have a great network to know about these little towns with populations less than 10,000 to sell their drugs in. Of course some blame is on the individuals who choose to buy the drugs which only make their lives worse.

So you're saying an out-of-town visitor would be safer in Detroit, excuse me, "Downtown" Detroit than a comparable downtown area of Chicago or Manhattan?

Yes, I was thinking of Ashland, KY. There was a series about it in the Detroit paper a while back.....Correction....it was Huntington, WV. Something about multiple High School Prom night murders by Detroiters selling cocaine in Huntington.

Where exactly did I say that? I wrote I feel as safe in downtown Detroit and safer than in some parts of Chicago or Manhattan. I certainly have no problem taking my out of town visitors downtown. I am "cautious" in all cities because I have the common sense to know there is generally more crime in cities than suburbs or small towns. Actually I am cautious everywhere because I am a woman and that's just life. Men have no idea. I could talk to someone in super safe Plymouth and be raped if I don't use caution. I hope your wife understands that walking around with your head in the clouds is not a luxury woman can afford even in Plymouth.

Downtown Detroit is the worst some of you people can do? Try downtown Newark, Camden, Chester, Oakland, Compton, etc. From the sounds of Flint, Detroit might not even be tops in the state.
