Default Troy houses

I am looking into buying a second home in Troy. First off, I am aware of the current problems in Detroit. Most of my family is there, in Macomb County. I am just considering it as my fiance wants me to consider being close to his family in ATL. I lived in St. Clair Shores from 1991-1995 and have only visited since.

So, to my quesiton, what is life like these days in Troy? It was my favorite city in the area. Beautiful homes and nice amenities. How are the problems in Detroit affecting this area in particular?

Thanks!!

My family all lives in Troy. Actually Troy is doing pretty good. Right now is a good time to buy a house there because there is room for negotations. It's a nice city, consistantly makes it as one of the top safest cities in the country...yes, the country. It's listed at like number 4 or around there. It's a nice city, good schools, nice houses, low crime, great restaurants and shopping, etc. In my opinion you can't really go wrong buying in Troy.

I know this question was posted a long time ago, but I am going to answer it anyway, in case anyone else was wondering about Troy.

Since you have lived in MI, you already know the drawbacks - what you are in for with the winters, etc.

I live in Troy now, living in MI temporarily, and I like Troy. It is super safe, the fifth safest city in the US. We don't have children, but the schools are exemplary. There is shopping galore for whatever you could want or need - you won't need to go far for anything in Troy.

There is no downtown in Troy (so it is a little lacking in nightlife), but Royal Oak downtown, Ferndale downtown, Berkeley downtown, and Rochester downtown are 10-25 minutes away and all are enjoyable and distinctly different from one another.

The city of Troy has some kind of public health club/gym at the Troy civic center where I suppose they charge some small fee and residents can use fitness equipment. The Troy Library is in bad need of makeover, I'm afraid, but otherwise is OK. The police, fire department/EMS and services like that are pretty good.

Troy Library won an Awarded for Best Library in the Country serving it's population size. It's the second most diverse city in michigan after Ann Arbor. It has some of the best public schools in state and country. It's boring because it's a very family based city.

Boring? That's crazy. It's safe, has good schools, the city 80 percent white and you are minutes down the freeway from doing just about anything you want. Sounds good to me.

Yes, boring. Troy is just another strip-mall gridded subdivision haven. It has lots of good things going for it but it has no personality, except for the end down past Somerset near Birmingham IMO. But it is a nice, safe, boring town.

Well I'm glad you feel that way, it's comforting knowing you and I won't ever be neighbors.
