I had an inter view with them one of the 2 interviews I have been able to get in the past year, and I didn't get the job. They said my experience with the school is why they wanted to interview me. I am sure I got passed over by someone with a college degree.

But wait ...education is the key to sucess , just not in this state!! I was at the Michworks "no worker left behind" seminar last week and that seems to be what people are trying to make us think.
And I can't really speak for other professions since I don't know anything about them , I'm only speaking about manufacturing and automotive. I have plenty of friends with ME degree's that can't find work. I myself was a designer and am pretty sure I will never be back in the industry again. I would love to jump into the defense/aero industry but coming from automotive it isn't likely.
I guess I'm one of the few that really like it here, I did work out of state for two years and came back. The sad thing is if I do retrain into something else the chances of me landing a job here is going to be very low. So I'll be another person that leaves the state. I just don't think education is going to turn this state around.
Sorry for the rant.. just really frustrated right now.

Same here myself too, I am a laid off worker from the auto industries and not optimistic at all finding another oppornity in this state.
It is very depressing. Michigan is laying so many employees that there are far less funding to support our schools. Home value are plummeting and less taxes to support schools.

It is very sad to see that in this state which has so much beauty in it. If I could have found a job, I surely would have stayed because I do like the climate here. Maybe when things recover I can move back at some point.

Education is touted as the key to getting better jobs in this state, but it has failed for me. I graduated with a BA in 2007 magna c um laude and it took me 7 months to get hired part-time minimum wage at Starbucks. A year after graduation I finally got hired in my present job, one which does require a degree - but only offers 18 hours a week. I can't even pay back my student loans on this kind of income. The job market in this state is beyond depressing. I want to move and would never move again without a job lined up in advance, but I've spent so much money traveling to other states for interviews and still haven't gotten an offer that now I don't have the money to move anymore. I don't have any idea what the way out of this situation is!

I'm in the same boat as you - I'm graduating from college, and I can't buy a job. There are NO jobs here - not even Wendy's or Burger King are hiring! I'm still looking for a job - hopefully I can find something soon. Yes, it is very depressing.

Hello Kazoopilot, Wanderer74, and Ahmsmom3;
Don't give up trying to find a job...any job that's out of state. You have to cast a wider net now. Aug. 2007 I found my out of state job becuase I was interviewed and hired over the phone sight unseen!! I relocated to North Carolina for a teaching job. I still have the job teaching 6th grade math and have already signed my contract for next year. Leaving Michigan and its stagnant economy was the smartest thing yet (Other than getting my teaching degree), that I've ever done. I'm not saying that NC is the state for you. The layoffs are hitting here now, as IBM and many of the companies in RTP (Research Triabgle Park) have laid off workers recently. Still...many, many families are moving to NC and our schools are exploding at the seams. They are still building homes here...and schools. Charlotte NC is also a boom town. I've heard that South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming are still good places to find a job. I believe that there is hope for you in findinfg a job. After all...in 07 I thought my situation was hopeless...and here I am alive and well in NC.

I don't know of any jobs other than service jobs in Michigan but the new filming industry may be producing jobs soon here in Michigan.
