Wedding Venue
Hey everyone:
Looking to have a relatively small wedding in the Metro area. Any ideas for affordable spots? Civic sites? Chapels, etc.? Will be willing to look intro rec centers as well if they are in good condition as rented out by the city.
I'm looking a mid March 09. Also, may need a spot to have a small reception. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Congrats to you!
Our ceremony was at the church I was baptized at and you need to be a member to marry there. We also had a crazy big wedding so small does not compute, lol.
I suggest you look here at the knot:
DETROIT Wedding Planning Resources
Lots of resources for local vendors and sites of all kinds. I found it pretty helpful when planning my wedding.
Good luck!

St. Clair Shores (Suburb on East Side - just past the grosse pointes) put in lovely reflecting pool with a bridge, and garden ... just at about 10 mile. Its in front of "blossom heath" which used to be city owned, but now may be private.
Many people have had outdoor ceremonies there at the pond/bridge, then have a reception at Blossom Heath, or some other hall nearby.
I would imagine you'll have to check with St. Clair Shores city of parks/rec to find out about renting the area for a wedding, but if you have time to drive buy it will be obvious -- its right at Jefferson and 10 mile.
good luck!

Where are you located?
The Episcopal church on Grosse Ile has a cozy historic chapel with a stained glass window that people come from Europe to see. the Catholic Church there has an historic chapel as well. I have not been inside it. Both are right on the water front. Either would be a nice locale for a small wedding. The township has an old military officers quarters that might be available for a reception. Otherwise there are several very nice Country clubs and Yacht clubs.
Greenfield Villiage is suposed to have a nice place for a wedding.
Heritage Park in Taylor has a neat historic chapel.
There is an old Railrod Depot in a park in South Lyon (called the witches hat becuase of its shape). Neat building in a decent spot. I am not sure if they rent it out for weddings or not.
For an outdoor wedding, you could reserve a pavillion at Kensington Metropark.
The Detroit Princess (excursion boat) might be a nice place for a wedding, but I have heard that the food is mediochre at best.
The prettiest churches that I have seen are in Detroit. I see them from the freeway, so I have no idea what they are like or whether the neighborhoods are decent.
The Detroit Yacht Club on Belle Isle is very nice, but you may need to have a membership to use it. I am not certain.

If you have money, Cranbrook has a mansion that is a lovely place for a wedding. I went to a wedding there once and it was perfect, but the bride is very very wealthy, so I imagine that it is quite pricey.
