I have heard such words as decaying and rundown attached to Detroit whenever brought up in conversation. Living in Los Angeles, is there anything thing worth visiting Detroit for.

Those of you that live in Detroit, do you enjoy living there?

I must say I have met some very attractive women from Detroit. My g/f is from Detroit. Detroit seems to be a paradox in comparison to the people that i have met and the actual image of Detroit.

Downtown Detroit is ok. Everything else sucks until you get north of 8 mile road.

There is a lot to see and do in the Detroit area. The downtown is a decent downtown. The neighborhoods immediately surrounding downtown are mostly dangerous and decaying. The suburbs are wonderful.

To Visit downtown:
Art Museum
Science Center
Greektown!
Eastern Market
Hamtrammack
Campus Martius
Ren Cen
Fisher Theather
Fox Theater
Gem Theater
Tiger Stadium
Ford Field
Joe Luis Arena.
Cobo Hall.

There are some great special events, mostly in summer. Jazz Fesival, Techno music convention, Winterfest . . . . .

You can ride the silly people mover around the downtown area and get off at lots of different places.

If you lke historic architecture:
Fisher building
Guardian Building
Penobscott
Old Main at Wayne State University

If you are into shopping The Sumerset Collection at Troy is the nicest large mall that I have been to anywhere in the country.

In Dearborn the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Villiage are unparalleled. If you do nothing else, go there. Look it up on the internet for information. Also the tour of the Ford River Rouge PLant is really neat. (Hurry up before they sell it off).

There are Casinos in Detroit as well. They are nice. Pretty much typical non themed casinos that you would find in any gambling city.

Ann Arbor, about an hour form Detroit is a nice College town. Michigan Stadium is one of the primary attractions, but there is a lot to do there.

If you golf, there are more golf courses in this area than anywhere.

There are loads of great places for caoneing, kayaking, sailing or watersports.

Cabellas in Dundee is the largest sprotig goods/outdoor store anywhere. It is half store and half museum.

The area around Detroit is loaded with quaint historic small towns, especially near Ann Arbor.

Windsor Canada across the river is a nice place to visit. (bring a passport).

Most of michigan is about ourdoors, wilderness, trees and water activities. Most of that is to the north of Detroit.

the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise is an amazing event for car buffs.

and Yes, there are loads of extraordinarily attractive women in this area. They can be kind of hard to see in their coats and snow pants. However the nice thing is that they are attractive on the inside as much as on the outside. (Not many So.Cal. Barbie types here)

Lake St Clair what else does one need? I could spend EVERY summer for the rest of my life on St Clair and not miss anything.

For a link to the Lake area - boating - fishing and socializing lscn.net is the place to go.

I lived in Shelby Township and it's very nice out there. I worked in Troy which is a very nice suburb but prefer the nice folks in Shelby or Sterling Heights.

And then there is Harsens Island... A community where one has to take an auto ferry across to a wonderful community. It's like stepping into days gone by.

Radio is never better than it is in Detroit. There are many thinks I love about the area. One is shoping at Mejiers stores. It's an easy town to learn, the roads were set up for driving. Can't say enough good about Detroit and would move back in a moment if my work took me there.

Good post.

Even though I am Chicago (area), I went to school in Michigan, I like to give Michigan some love.

Here is the truth. Detroit is pretty bad as a city. Downtown Detroit though is actually not bad at all lots to do and safe. The city outside of Downtown is pretty bad its a big city area wise too. Detroit has some of the nicest suburbs in the country. Oakland County to the north of Detroit is one of the richest counties in the country. The top management for Ford, GM, Chrysler, and automotive suppliers have to live somewhere. Troy, MI has Bently, Lambo, Ferrari, Maybach dealerships whatever you want. Hot woman everywhere because they follow the wealth and its really the only place in Michigan to make big money. Where there is very poor there is also rich thats how our country works. If you came to the suburbs you would be shocked. While in a Novi (metro Detroits enterainment district) bar i met a guy that went to USC and he is going to U. of Michigan for Bussiness for his Masters and he thinks it is just like LA we have a Luck'ys or whatever you want. Some of the mayors around here are from Cali so they bring in attributes from there. Besides some colder weather. Detroit is really cool! People live and breath pro sports too.

Really?!? I've never heard of Novi described as anything but a bunch of shopping malls and subdivisions. Sure there are restaurants and bars, but "Detroit's entertainment district"? It's a suburb.

Agreed - Novi is mall and more mall. NICE malls, don't get me wrong! The surrounding lakes are pretty. But not that entertaining. If you are looking to go bar-hopping and see live bands and such, try just north of Detroit in Ferndale/Royal Oak. There are a lot of great venues to see live music in downtown Detroit too! If you come to town, pick up a Metro Times for all the local listings.

Detroit is a GREAT sports town! Even though our Lions suck the big one, the Tigers and Red Wings are a lot of fun to go and see. Joe Louis Arena is a little older, but Comerica Park and Ford Field are brand new, with great dining/drinking establishments right across the street.

I also love the Detroit Institute of Arts, it has just been totally remodeled in the past few years and it's absolutely wonderful. If you have kids, they have great things for them to do there now - lots to touch and play with and discover. I don't have kids, but I was floored too, fun fun fun!!!

I haven't been to the Campus Martius area but people seem to rave about it. Even the visitors who came around during the MLB All-Star Game and the Superbowl loved it. I think there's shopping and dining, a park maybe?

Detroit has been trying so hard for so many years to become a great city again, but government corruption and the economy have really been working against it. There are good people who still believe and are working every day to make it a wonderful place to hang out. There are also bad elements that can make it kind of a scary place to visit. Like with any big city, be aware of your surroundings and listen to your instincts, don't go down dark alleys and don't hang out in empty parking lots, of course! Just don't be stupid and you'll find that you can have a lot of fun in Detroit.

I take exception to Coldjensen's statement that the neighborhoods are mostly dangerous - which they are not. Decaying - yes they are, because of this foreclosure crisis, vacant, foreclosed houses are being pillaged by scrappers. Also, many people are leaving for the suburbs or out of state, and the houses they leave behind are not well-maintained or are being stripped.

Detroit definitely has more violent crime than its surrounding communities, but not "most" of Detroit neighborhoods are "dangerous". (Maybe we have varying definitions of dangerous)

What I find attractive about Detroit is its older housing stock, which was built much better than the drywall palaces that have been built in the suburbs. Most of the city is walkable to semi-walkable, which I find attractive. (It would be nice to have more businesses to walk to other than liquor stores and gas stations)

But Detroit does not have alot going for it - it's not very historic (compared to other northern cities like New York or Boston), it's economy is stagnant and limited, no rapid transit, it gets real cold (compared to ATL and DAL and HOU), too many poor people, too much crime.
