From what I read, it is very popular. I am glad that some people see the worth of restoring historic buildings. I hope the fate of the Book Cadillac is followed by some of the other old abandoned hotels that are planned to be restored, like I believe the Fort Shelby. But for all the ones restored, others were lost to demolition, like the Tuller and Statler- Cadillac. Of course, these places had their era, and it passed, but at least for the Book Cadillac, it seems to be coming back.

As someone who lived and worked downtown, I can tell you from experience that there are plenty of other conventions besides NAIAS that happen year round. Sure, they're not as big but they still bring people into the city.
I do agree with you that there seems to be a glut of hotels downtown but it seems like all of them are surviving, sans Greektown. Don't forget about the Hilton Garden Inn and the Leland Hotel, either.

Ya the residential units consist of the top 8 floors of the hotel/condo. Just goes to show when things are done correctly in Detroit and not screwed around with, or catered to the lowest common denominator, things actually can work quite well.

I think that article was developer bs. I heard john ferchill on the radio a while back and he said the opposite of what was written in that article. He said they were having some trouble selling( people actually moving in) the condos. I guess they were "sold" but the purchasers walked on their deposits. Besides isn`t he the same guy trying to sell other buildings downtown he owns and he cancelled that cadillac centre project too. Many other condo projects downtown were canceled because of this horrible economy. But I must say the book cadillac is a beautiful place and im glad it did get remodeled though.

On the other side, which piece of news makes people stop and listen a bit more? Someone saying things are going great in Detroit, or the condos doing so horrible that the entire city is going to shut down.
