Stop bashing Detroit (Troy, Royal Oak, Birmingham: crime, neighborhoods, good schools)

Real Simple! I was born and raised in North Jersey! After college I lived in the Baltimore area before moving to metro Detroit! We lived in metro Detroit for 9 years before moving to NE Ohio (Cleveland suburbs). Metro Detroit offers alot, however the nobody know anything about Royal Oak, Birmingham, Troy, etc. outside of Detroit. Everyone just knows Detroit! SE Michigan will only grow and attract businesses if Detroit is viewed in a better light. Advice #1 - Stop bashing Detroit. Advice #2 - Give Detroit a shot. When was the last time you visited one of the nice/affordable museums? Advice #3 - When was the last time you had dinner in Detroit (Greektown)?
I really enjoyed living there but without a brighter future it would tough to return. We lost over $100k when we sold our house. However, THE REGION must work together to attract businesses and grow. What ever happens to the auto industry it will not be the same. If I am seeking to relocate a business or start a business, would I choose Metro Detroit, Nashville, or Austin, Texas. The unemploymwnt rates states not Metro Detroit.

I'm always sort of amused when someone says something like "Hey, don't base your views of the region just on Detroit, Detroit isn't the whole area!" And then suggests dinner at Greektown....Detroit isn't just Greektown anymore than S/E Michigan is just Detroit. In fact, Greektown isn't really Greektown either without Hella's.

I agree with exit 100%. I would love to see more jobs come to Detroit. Maybe Barak Obama will help out since his biggest strength is job growth. Look what he did to Chicago.

Are you sure it was not Governor Rod Blagojevic who took care of Chicago? Or is he like Michigan Gov Jennifer Granholm who after 5 years figured out that by giving Tax incentives would bring in some kind of revenue to Michigan.

Amusing and sad at the same time. Just goes to show what most think is "good" about Detroit.

Getting better city services, good schools and lowering crime would go a long way to making Detroit more attractive to people. Until that happens, the exodus will continue. People are voting with their feet on how livable Detroit is.
