Could'nt they increase property taxes for those who failed to upkeep their property, while lower them for occupied buildings. I am sure that will fill the city's coffers, which can then allow for more upkeep and police protection.

The Michigan Central Depot is located just southwest of downtown, a very short distance though, you can see it when you are in downtown. As for plans to refurbish it, plainly said, none what so ever. The building is in horriable shape, basically every single window has been broken out. The building has graffiti in every square inch a person can get to, and the exterior is very dirty, it has not been cleaned in at least 20 years! I believe at one time, maybe 7-10 years ago, the city proposed to renovate it, and turn it into the new Detroit Police Headquarters, but even then they voted against it, saying that it would be way to expensive to renovate, and that was probably a decade ago, today the building is 10 times worse the shape than it was back then. Sadly, I see no future for the beautiful historic building, except the demolishing ball, but as I said before in another post, the city does not even have the money for that, so for now it sits empty.

As to the vacant homes--whoa @ 45,000 added to Detroit. How many does Detroit have sitting vacant without this number? It's such a sad situation. Ugh.
I don`t know if the new mayor will fix anything but he didn`t do anything while he was council president.

I think number of vacant homes is between 80,000-100,000. Seriously, there are some areas that were o.k but not anymore. Just drive around and see.

Theres not many people or buildings left along 6 Mile from Ryan to Van Dyke.
Take a look at any neighborhood off of Van Dyke, north of I-94 to 8 Mile. Most are already destroyed and long gone in the hoods just north of the once vibrant Harper-Van Dyke area. The seeds of abandonment and destruction are just starting to blossom north of 7 Mile.
Also look at Ryan north of East Davison to East McNichols,
Ruins are also sprouting more and more on Ryan south of East Outer Drive these days too. Zipcode 48212 and now also 48234 are really falling apart fast.

Warrendale nowadays feels like brightmoor did in the 80`s ( and we all how how brightmoor turned out). A few years back it wasn`t that bad but now there are streets filled with vacant houses and crime is alot worse.

kwame was probably the most corrupt politician detroit has ever seen. he threw lavish parties every weekend that cost $150,000 or more. he had an entourage that he paid as security that were his friends. his wife killed a stripper/hooker in the mayors mansion. he expected to be paid off in order to do anything for any devolpers or corporations.

council members have a slush fund for office supplies etc. one of then used the money to make a calender of her different hats and then printed it with city equipment, then sold it for money. costing her nothing to make and all profit for her pocket.

This is the last I heard

Michigan Central Depot owners say 'Roll 'em!' | The Detroit News | detnews.com

Quote:
Depot owners said they still are working on renovating the decaying Beaux-Arts, neo-classical building that's been closed since 1988.
"Our goal is to save the building" Stamper said.
It would take $80 million to renovate, he said. "The financing isn't the problem but finding the proper re-use of it. That's something we continue to study and look for the right idea. The real use of it should have been one of the casinos," Stamper said.

Last week, George Jackson, head of the Detroit Economic Growth Corp., the city's development agency, said that the only "real option" is to tear down the building. But Stamper said demolition is "not something we're actively considering right now."

The Depot was used in the movie Transformers.

The allegations about Kwame is that his wife beat up the stripper at the party. The stripper was later gunned down not long before she was expected to testify. Some speculate that Kwame or his cronies were behind her murder. There is no proof, but a lot of people are inclined to belive it. What actually happened at that party (if there was a party) is unknown and well covered. There were not $150,000 parties at the mansion every weekend. There was parties, but not that often and few were that big. He did pretty much ruin the interior of the mansion from what I understand.

Kwame is an awful guy, but it is funny how things get so twisted and then repeated as facts when they are not even consistent with the actual allegations or rumours.

I'll have to pull up google earth and look at the satellite views. Detroit fascinates me. I want to visit in the future and look at the layout of the city....so sad. I hope it can come back strong in the future.

my source is from one of the officers who resigned after the incident years ago, if you remember about the time the chief of detroit got into trouble at the airport for have a weapon without a license...they all resigned because of the cover up.

while i did exaggerate about the parties the point was, the parties were all too often and all for fun. nothing he did was to serve the public or city.

with the falling housing markets the outer Detroit suburbs will become much cheaper...making it possible for Detroiters to move to other cities and escape Detroit. This will contribute to the decline in Detroits population...and may also lead to the decline of the surrounding areas (not population wise, either)

Erik - good point - hadn't thought about it before. Those in Detroit who will be losing their jobs - the lucky few who actually have savings can also leave. They could move here to Rockport Texas but its been the coldest day since last Feb- 59 degrees- I may stay in bed.
